Thunderstorm No 2 now taking place!
It's unusual - if not actually rare - to get thunder this far inland in December, but to have two in one day - with possibly more to come - is unique in all my years of amateur observings. What seems to be happening is the passage of an occluded front acting in conjunction with the passage of the centre of its associated depression as a convergence zone: these are big storms appearing to merge into mini MSCs. There isn't that much in the way of lightning - one wouldn't expect it in a winter storm - but from the sound and duration of the thunder most of the strikes appear to be cloud-to-ground.

There are some great photo captures of today's weather in the vicinity of London. The one taken from Stapleford Abbots this afternoon, just north of Romford, shows tangled anvil clouds (cumulonimbus) showing up on their shaded side as grey. The one in the centre of the picture would appear to be still in its later growth stages, whereas behind and to each side the anvils are more "feathery" around the edges, showing weakening, and soon to fragment into the sky as cirrus. This has produced a dramatic sunset with areas of tangled grey vestiges of anvil clouds overlaid by cloud sheets picked out in bright orange. I find this BBC weather page very useful. Clicking on "Full Screen" under the current chart and then on "Observations" one can see the direction taken by today's showers and storms.

No rain and reasonably mild if not standing around in the breeze too long. As the choir I sing with was doing its duty today, singing carols outside in town while Santa dispensed gifts to children, we appreciated not getting wet and not freezing our bits off, although after nearly 40 minutes of standing on a rather draughty corner a certain chilliness was creeping in.
I was able to do a bit of pottering in the garden after lunch, assembling rings from willow and purple plum twigs ready for adding holly etc to make wreaths for outside decoration. The grey cloud cover gradually cleared, although not quite to the point of revealing the sun, until just before departing for the day. So now there is a palest duck-egg blue sky adorned with tastefully distributed fluffs of blush pink cloud.Comment

Stratocumulus roller cloud all-over cover all day down here today, and actually low enough to cut off the top of the Crystal Palace mast. The forecasters are widening their own margin for error these days - so wide a scope of possibilities would never have been allowed back in the day - 10-14C being predicted for the bulk of the country!
Our maximum of 11C was somewhat mitigated by the chill of dampness - fewer walkers in the parks than usual on a Saturday.

Our solar-powered radio on the bathroom window-sill has a low charge warning light. This does not occur very often. I can't offer such a precise cloud description but N Wilts presumably has a similar scenario.Originally posted by Serial_Apologist View PostComment

The forecast was(and still is) for wall to wall overcast, which did much to damp my guilt about staying indoors to listen to the EBU music day broadcast - childhood conditioning about not wasting opportunities to be doing things, preferably outside, has never fully left me unfortunately. So, the fact that thus far the forecast has been very wrong, and it's been blue sky and sunshine since sun-up is a bit of a bummer as they say.Comment

Not so much Walter Wall sunshine here today, as there's too much humidity in this airstream, and hence large amounts of stratocumulus, for that to be. Hopefully the lowering of the dewpoint after yesterday's dingefest will be enough to blow most of the excess dampness from my washing line display!Originally posted by oddoneout View Post
