The delights of an energetic NE wind here too - wind chill becomes an experience not a theory in such circumstances. Which tomorrow, my laundry day, will hopefully also be, though we've had a couple of lightish showers today, and the official forecaster's predictions of wind chill have certainly been borne out. I have had a nasty stiff upper back and shoulder for the past 3 days, I am sure as a consequence of outings without sufficient protection. Terrible weather afflicting eastern Spain and the Balearics [sic] since yesterday: near-hurricane force winds and blizzards - the effects of unmoderated continental arctic air sweeping in from the NE - the same direction as here, but in their case arriving on a massive curve from an extremely cold eastern Europe and ultimately Siberia, whereas here we have a recently arrived high supplying our wind source, making for the gloomy damp cold expected to last until the weekend. After that we could well be seeing some snow down the eastern half of the country, with winds more directly from the N Pole.Comment

The Yorkshire press have been full of predictions of snow for about a week. No suggestion of this on current Met Office forecast for this location, however. Must admit, at my age I can do without snow!Comment

Quietly nasty NE wind - and any NE wind up here has 'attitude' - but sort of dry and even sort of bits of sun.

Gusty NE "breeze" here today as well, but with the added joy of frequent light or not so light showers. The volunteer gardening this morning was a bit of a pain - cold and wet - but we battled on anyway. It now looks likely to get quite a bit colder towards the weekend and into early next week, with Monday and Tuesday the most likely days for snowfall practically anywhere. From later next week the cold high to the north gets shunted east by a renewed Atlantic jet, promising temperatures nearer to or above early March averages, and more changeable weather than for the past very dry February, bringing substantial amounts of much-needed rain to most areas.Comment

Indeed - and today provides possibly the last opportunity for an outdoor wander in the wilds before it all turns quaggy once more - so I'm off out to the woods, shortly. Occasional light spotting from a semi-broken cloud as I write, and temporarily milder than of late, temperature around the 9 C mark. Wednesday into Thursday sees one of those classic will it or won't it situations as tropical air tries to push its way north against northerlies streaming down from the Arctic high to the NW. There's a chance of some snow first thing tomorrow for anywhere south of the M4 corridor as cold overnight air sneaks in behind the cold front currently traversing the country from the NW. Elsewhere can expect snow showers, and temporary settling where the amounts are substantial. And it's going to feel pretty raw.Originally posted by DracoM View Post

Las week's weather was tiresome and this week doesn't look much better. Cold winds last week were made worse by constant dampness(not rain), now we are getting proper rain which although light doesn't feel like it because of the wind which, although it's moved away from northerly directions is still "brisk". I notice that last night the wind went round to the south and the temperature dropped to -2 - which doesn't make much sense. Remains to be seen what form precipitation will take over the next couple of days, but it's going to be cold whatever falls or doesn't from the sky.
I had to force myself to get out this afternoon for a bit of exercise and fresh air doing a couple of errands in town. Few folk about and no-one wanting to stop and chat, even in the shops, so little to offset the dank gloom.Comment

Light snow now falling here: yes, snow - not sleet mind - at 3.5 C, which must indicate a drying out of the post-frontal air at lower levels. This won't settle of course, and I imagine a lot more is going on further up country. Tonight and through tomorrow that aforementioned warm front will attempt to push its wide precipitation belt north into the southern part of England and maybe S Wales; meanwhile all parts further north will still be in the unstable northerly régime, with snow showers, and maybe even one or two thunderstorms in the mix: nice cumulonimbus cloud shots on the lunchtime reports from Scotland!
