Sunny and mild, though with a brisk wind. No jacket necessary today though.

Those strong winds should soon be moving away, anton. Fortunately we weren't affected down here. Temperatures did not fall below 11C here last night, which would be normal in mid-summer! They are expected to reach 15 C in a few spots over the next 3 days!

Anyone know what's going on with the forum today? I am unable to access in the usual way, and the "What's New?" facility appears to be down.

Strange, 'cos it's never happened before. I've posted a question on the Questions thread.

Something went through these parts on Thursday - a grey damp(leaky as a friend put it) day, supposedly mild but not feeling it. Today completely different, plenty of sun particularly late morning on, and properly mild(high of 15 at the recording station), although very strong winds tending to knock that down bit in exposed or wind-tunnel places. Lots of small bulbs giving spots of colour everywhere.

It would seem that the mild to very mild conditions at present are set to continue until the end of next week. After that, some kind of change, with blocking once more the main feature, and some talk of cold easterlies setting in after that.

15C reached this afternoon - highest this year so far.

Well, up here, it's 4C as I post and a nastily cutting westerly with frequent sobs of driving rain is making it colder.
                  'Milder' eh? As b.....y if

The words 'Cumbria' or 'the North West of England' did not appear in the 10 a.m. forecast on BBC radio.
Scottish highlands and Borders mentioned. ................and all likely to get a lot better there as day wears on...good.
                    BUT
here, it is totally saturated, visibility measurable in a hundred yards or so, horizons are therefore near rather than far, it is pelting it down hard. So, thx BBC.

OTOH yr.no [forecasting from Norway for my area] says that it is a total shutdown foggy mist / cloud and rain. And looking out of my window as I post, I know which forecast I can trust - as indeed do many of the serious farmers in my area, who mostly reject the often shamefully and even ludicrously inaccurate and thus unhelpful BBC stuff.

Sunshine expected to return on Thursday, but with a fresh NW wind and temps nearer to the expected norms for late Feb, before the high pressure system in the mid-N Atlantic transfers north of Scotland with nor-easterlies settling in at the weekend and for a few days thereafter, along with frosty nights, especially for the North. Very little rain (or snow) anywhere expected, apart from with the passage of the cold front on Weds and Thurs.

This a.m. visibility down to 50 metres. On a street with zebra crossings - one at bottom of the hill, one at a super tricky crossroad at the top, and it's a street accommodating THREE schools in a fraction under half a mile, you may guess at the probs!

"Mummy mummy, I couldn't go to school today!"

                          "Why not dear?"

                          "Because it wasn't there!"

Dull with poor visibility here too, though I can just about make out the London Eye from this distance of 6 miles.

A coldish theme for the next week or so - not that temperatures will be far from where they would be expected to be, but coming off of the North Sea always makes for a raw edge to the wind.

Goodness knows when we are due for some much-needed rain; parts of the SE have had a mere 4% of the February average - the cloud is breaking as I write, indicating passage from yet another dried out frontal system.

This week's weather has been pretty depressing a lot of the time- grey, cold, dank, with occasional spits of rain and rather a lot of cold air. Last night frost settled in early, necessitating car window clearing after choir rehearsal, but cleared quickly round dawn. This morning the forecast had suggested that it might be better to delay going out for errands until after midday, so I had an early lunch and got organised, only to see rain being thrown at the windows; the wind had got up and was making the most of what would otherwise not have been much of a rain effort. That was quite a disincentive, as the wind was from the N and so it wasn't just wet, it was blooming cold. After a while there were signs of calming down so I put on an extra layer and set out. It gradually cleared, there were even a few flashes of sun and I managed to get back just as a chunk of very black cloud suddenly appeared. It didn't do much, partly because it was moving too quickly, and the sky is now clearing so likely to be another cold night. Tomorrow doesn't look too inviting overcast and a strong NE wind, never a good look in these parts.
