Showing as -2.5 overnight which is an improvement on the -4.5 of the previous nights, but the difference isn't immediately apparent as there was very limited melting of existing ice on previous days. Emptying the main birdbath (metal dustbin lid on top of a large plantpot) this morning proved interesting. During the freeze I've been putting out water in smaller containers on the patio which are easier to keep filled, but I noticed a robin trying to use the metal one so went out with a kettle of hot water. It had been full to the brim after the rain, which after "normal" frosts wouldn't have frozen to any great depth, especially if there was any daytime sun as it's protected by a hedge at its back and faces south, but was now frozen solid - several inches of ice not wanting to come out. Did eventually get it (mostly) out and hope the robin and other birds find and use it. The forecasts for the days ahead suggest I'll need to repeat the exercise each day, as well as continuing with the smaller drinking water provision.
Plenty of sun currently but there is talk of wintery showers in the afternoon - just when I have to walk into town for an eye test.
