"As steals the rosy dawn..." Which doesn't bode well for the day ahead, confirmed by looking at the forecast just now. Even knowing what it can mean doesn't detract from the pleasure of the effect though; the colour low on the horizon brings a more positive light to the house interior than grey cloud cover which is what there is now ahead of the rain starting. Just before the grey took over at 8am there was a very brief episode where a small patch of teased out wispy cottonwool was highlighted in pink against a blue-grey ground; something to keep in my mind's eye as the wind picks up and the rain descends and I pluck up courage to get outside for a brief bit of exercise later on!

Same here now and I decided to try and make some use of it by taking a brush to the various bits of vegetative life that have taken residence on my car. Looked awful at first with streaks of algae and bits of moss and lichen slow to move, but as the rain has got heavier and the wind is pushing it around most of it is now off.

Here the rain has now reduced to a fine drizzle as light levels lift, although with the cloud base still low in the near-saturated air drawn in behind the warm front. Winds have let up as the isobars widen out but surface temps at 9 C have yet to rise as the warmer maritime tropical warm sector air arrives with once more strengthening winds. The cold front's expected to come through this side of the country around 9-10 tonight, announced with temporarily blusteriness and maybe half an hour to an hour of moderate to heavy rain, followed by wind shift to the west and clearing skies. Another day of routine British winter weather, surprise surprise!

No, just parked on a mucky unmade road and never washed - apart from windows and lights. My cars have always been old and I'm not precious about their appearance. There have been occasions when higher order plants have been known to set up home, perhaps the best being the birch seedling that appeared where the windscreen meets the dashboard.
The rain cleared up during the afternoon but the wind is now winding itself up again; the recycling bins were finally emptied today so I'm not going to bother with the bungee strap - if it goes over no matter.
I'm hoping for reasonable(or at least dry!) weather tomorrow as it's the first volunteer garden session after a longer than usual break - the extreme cold one week and a morning of torrential rain another were added to the annual 3 week Christmas/New Year site shut down. So far the forecast looks OK...

Pelting down with rain and earlier rather windy, which has died down somewhat, now.

gov.uk flood check gives an astonishing 45.6mm for our localty for the last 24 hours. https://check-for-flooding.service.g...-station/53103. For the first time in quite awhile there is standing water in the garden ... and still chucking it down.

And can the BBC STOP telling us it's mild? Here it is icy-edged and nasty.

It's set to be a noisy night here as well with gusts well over 40mph although so far dry and should stay that way. The forecast makes it clear that it's not mild here, with wind chill taking it to "feels like" 1 or 2 during the night, and 4 tomorrow as the wind continues.

Yep, same here - haven't been out to see whether it's icy edged though! Met Office app suggests actual temperature of 6°C, but feels like 0°C.

The wind has abated somewhat thank heavens which will improve the temperature situation. Nice demonstration earlier of wind chill; it felt mild as I was putting compost scraps in the caddy outside the backdoor as the back of the house is sheltered from westerly winds. However putting rubbish in the bin out the front I was exposed to the wind being funnelled up the road between the houses and it definitely did not feel mild! The forecast of rain has gone now as well, so that will make this morning's errands a pleasanter prospect and perhaps I will even be able to get some washing on the line - problem there is that the whirligig isn't as well anchored as I would like and exposed to much more wind as it's further down the garden.
