-3C last night. Our boiler not working either! Both of us are vulnerable and they still haven’t turned up!

That's not good - I hope you have an alternative source of heat to keep one room warm at least. Have you been given any idea of an ETA, or are you in the "we'll get to you as quickly as possible" limbo?

I can only second that. A few years ago my boiler stopped functioning in a similar cold spell, and an engineer was here within 3 hours. I've no idea if that would still be the case: I have always been with British Gas for servicing; this year, instead of emailing for me to book an annual inspection, a general notice came through informing me of forthcoming charge increases along with the usual "helpful" advice on what to do in the event of... following a month later by a questionnaire asking me to rate my "latest service review" [sic], to which I put ticks in all the "neutral" boxes in disgust that there was no extra comment slot available, like, what do I feel about being asked to comment on something that has not actually taken place? Then came another telling me I should do a test by turning up my thermostat to 30C and run it for an hour (I think it said) to indicate possible problems. Which I have yet to do - I don't want to b*llocks my system up and then find myself in the lurch. Presumably they are short on engineers to send out for annual inspections. I hope you get sorted and soon, BBM.

Thick fog all day today, maximum temperature a fraction above zero I would think, judging by slight moisturization around some of the frost patches on the ground and on parked vehicles; the local woods looking quite eerie as I took an after lunch stroll of about a mile in the gathering gloom. A little symbol at the foot of my screen indicates "Snow to stop", which is ironic as it has not yet started!

Steady snow now falling here at zero celsius for the past half hour, and readily settling of course. We seem to be on the edge of a front lying across Sussex and Kent which sneaked up the Channel and has produced 4 inches of lying snow in the past two hours. To be fair, this was forecast. Temperatures not expected to recover to the averages until next Sunday.

The latest forecast suggests we might get snow here; at least with only light breezes it shouldn't drift.

It felt like it had turned to drizzle when I went out just now, which if so is going to make for a dangerous glaze on top of the couple of centimeters of snow which have fallen across London this evening. It was coming down quite heavily for about an hour - certainly cleared the fog that had been around all day in no time!

No snow overnight, and above low-level swirling mist there is blue sky and sun. Not quite as cold last night and temps now at or just above 0, possibly helped by the airflow going round to SE. I shall continue to admire the garden frosting from indoors - last night I discovered I had a temperature nudging 38C,(knew I had a bug didn't realise I had a fever too) and it's only a little lower now. I don't feel feverish, but the cold sets off the horrendous cough that has developed so fresh air will have to wait.

BBM, any news on your heating?

Hooray BBM - hope it gets sorted.

Here the temperature has just nudged above freezing point, as indicated by snow melting on pathways and the garage driveway, and falling off trees; but it's going to take some time to shift the 3 odd centimetres we had last night. Mild even by average standards by Sunday as wind and rain sweep in from the west, but at the moment there's 50/50 chance of a white Xmas, even down here. I've only just started work on Xmas cards - more hope over reality, and in all probability the post box will be crammed. There was no sunshine to warm the other side of the flat this morning, so I'm now going to switch on the central heating.
