Just looked up yesterday's local rainfall. 31 mm - a good drenching. In the afternoon we were visiting friends in Devizes. On the way back we had to take a detour with the road north of Avebury closed due to flooding.

Another lovely sunny warm day - just right for a trip out on the heritage railway, probably my last this season as they close next Sunday and are only running this weekend and next. It's not a scenic route as such but the views out over mostly small fields, hedges, copses, streams and scattered dwellings and hamlets are pleasing, and given the low running speed plenty of time to look. There is very limited evidence of industrial agriculture, largely I suspect because the underlying geomorphology (glacial rubbish) makes for very lumpy terrain that doesn't lend itself to the large machinery used on land not far away.

I shall probably be using the washing line much more this coming winter than I have in the past: one reason being the saving in electricity costs by not making use of my spin dryer; the other that said spin dryer is very old and showing signs of being on its last legs, now only being able to take quite small quantities of clothes at a time. Wet clothes will have to come in wet and be put on the folding stand in the bath. At least damp items can be ironed, which I don't normally bother to do during the warm part of the year. Final drying is done by draping items over various doors and radiators.
Tomorrow could turn out to be very wet indeed - the local BBC forecast has lightning symbols covering several daytime hours.

Turned out rather less dry than the forecast here.
Not what the Italians don’t call “ a good drying day”.
Still, seen worse, and I got a nice run in this morning when it was dry and mild.
Saw a record number of squirrels…….I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

No, for once the hounds of hell were absent or under control, thank goodness.
It was bloody difficult avoiding treading on the hundreds of squirrels as they crossed the paths though !!
Some people say squirrel numbers are up because there was so much less road kill in 2020.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
