Got too hot yesterday to continue volunteer gardening beyond midday. I had thought to go back this morning to deal with a couple of tasks left unfinished but as it's already above 20 degrees, and the places I would be working will be in sun, I won't! It's going to be a challenge to keep my small plants and seedlings cool enough today and tomorrow - there comes a point when, regardless of whether the compost is moist enough, the damage the heat does to the tender leaves is too much. I think I still have some net curtains in the shed which would do as shade cover - if I can find them and the meeses haven't use them as nesting material! Similarly in the veg patch I find it helpful to damp down the ground(as opposed to deep watering) around seedlings and not yet fully established transplants to reduce surface temperatures by providing some humidity. Experts decry the sprinkle approach to watering, with justification, but over the years I have found there are occasions when it is in fact the way to keep things alive until either lengthy sessions can be undertaken or natural provision/change of weather conditions solves the problem.

My back door shade thermometer has peaked at 32, and the Met Office recording station to the west peaked at 26, so it has definitely got hot! High cloud is drawing a welcome veil over the sun, knocking both the glare and the temp back somewhat. Tomorrow looks awful for someone like me who doesn't cope with heat; I need basic food supplies so will have to get into town early while it's still only mid 20s and then crash out for the middle of the day and wait for evening. Luckily I'm not working, but I feel for those who are.

It's 24 and rising in the shade at the moment so I must get breakfast finished and be off to get bread and milk, and perhaps stop off at the fish stall in the market for something for tea before it becomes impossible. It's due to haze over later which will help a little, as might the wind which is more than just a light breeze - although that isn't good news for plants already struggling with heat and/or lack of moisture.

Temperature had already reached 27.5 at midday here, which is pretty good given that it is almost as high as in central London - here we are usually 2-3 degrees cooler. 31 maximum is expected -fortunately there is a good breeze blowing today, which should at least create the impression if not actuality of a cooling effect. I'm staying indoors until evening, when I shall take my walk. There's uncertainty as to whether this hot spell will end with thunderstorms. I 'm banking on it being a yes.
