Dry surfaces cool faster than water volumes - and vice versa - hence, to scale up, one of the reasons for our relatively moderate climate as compared with, say, Moscow, is our surrounding seas: warmer in winter than inland ground surfaces; colder in summer.

I'd imagine you import lots of wind from Siberia. We must put a stop to that!

Today the average daytime maximum for London rises to 10 C. It has actually reached 14 C, and I am about to make the most of it on a round cycle trip to Streatham Common, which will be nice to see while still in its winter garb. We could well see leaf buds starting to break soon, as next week's temperatures are forecast to rise to 17 C - that's 63 F in old money.

An absolutely glorious day - wall to wall sun and blue sky, and a boisterous breeze that for once didn't knock the temps back - peaked at 16. That figures as I went in to do another volunteer garden stint, finishing spreading bark on footpaths in a wildlife garden ready for the season's opening to visitors on Monday, and had to shed layers as the morning went on. Lunch sitting outside with colleagues in one of the courtyards, admiring the violets, primroses and hellebores and watching brimstome and tortoiseshell butterflies and the buzzard pair, and just soaking up the warmth and light. A much needed antidote, even if brief, to the grim news at home and abroad.

Or look on the bright side - it powers the wind turbines. But I admit there are times when only the downside is apparent; having said that we don't have anything like the searing days on end freeze everything on contact periods that I remember having to endure when the children were small.

Indeed! - and a very enjoyable 12-mile round trip just returned from. Not quite reached the 16 C mark here. The blackthorn blossom looks and smells especially good this year.

Not as much rain on this cold front as I'd expected, but I think tomorrow's occlusion will bring substantial amounts, given that the country will be right on the cusp of the meeting point between the mild SE airflow to the east and more volatile westerlies trying to break through - which they're not expected to succeed in doing: next week the warmer winds return, for a time at least. If anyone's thinking of going on a Mediterranean cruise, I would suggest postponing, however!

Rain overnight and into the morning but hopefully moved on now and looks a bright afternoon. However expecting strong winds tomorrow!

Weather on the turn. Morning mostly mild and sunny but by lunchtime wind picking up and, together with loss of the sun, knocking the temp back. Rain is forecast but later than originally suggested. I got the grass cut again this morning, useful quantity of clippings to mulch a couple of veg beds recently cleared but not yet needed for sowing.

Blimey, didn’t it half rain yesterday! I hope we don’t get anymore, anytime soon! I think today, might be sunny, with cloud.

Probably not around here today unless the odd shower cloud builds up enough - maybe tonight as the system to the SW moves east, more probably tomorrow. But after that lot pushes away north it looks as if it will turn dry for most areas.
