Murky overnight and very cold, -5 by the back door his morning. There was quite a bit of moisture which settled on surfaces at one point during the night before the frost set in with a vengeance which meant windscreen clearing was harder and also there were ice slicks on some surfaces. I hadn't realised that and was caught out when I put a small box of bird food on the table outside the door while I stepped down to the patio, and it quickly slid across and off the other side - good thing it wasn't the china saucer I often use to collect the scraps on. Lovely day for being out though, bright sun, blue sky and no wind.
First volunteer gardening of the new year tomorrow and it looks as if it will be dull, but no overnight frost or rain forecast, so not a problem with any luck. Lovely as today is, such hard frost is not helpful for garden activities, especially where the ground stays frozen!

Milder today, than what it’s been, the last few days!

No frost last night, but not milder than yesterday, and in fact feeling colder because of the wind pushing dank air into gaps in clothing round the neck etc. A brief appearance by the sun around midday did make things better but the temperature dropped when it gave up and went back to sulking behind the cloud layer.
The lack of frost and rain was helpful for the garden team today but parts of the site were not that comfortable to work in, being in shade and wind tunnels - a case of just keeping moving and getting quickly through what needed to be done.

Hard frost, some sun, greyiish blue skies. 2C.

A lovely golden dawn and a sunny day to follow. Will be chilly, highs of 4 or 5 knocked back by the breeze, but with the sun and no rain that doesn't seem as bad, and out of the breeze the sun's warmth will have an effect, although probably not quite enough to make a drink in the little suntrap on the patio realistic. It won't be long though before that can be done I hope, and I can enjoy the scents and sight of the early flowering plants. The winter flowering cherry is just beginning to break bud - I don't know what has happened this season as it should start flowering from November, going through off and on to late March, but I'm going to be shortchanged this year! The heathers have come out as expected but unlike the cherry I can't see them from the kitchen window.

Similar temperature to yesterday but no sun yet so it feels quite a bit chillier.

Only 3.5 C down here and cloudy, so the thicker gloves will be required for my shopping bike ride this afternoon. Looks like this anticyclone is going to be around for much of next week too.

Warmer here too - it's about 1C, a few degrees makes a difference.

3C but after yesterday, feels a lot warmer than that!
Grey, thickish low cloud doing the biz, probably.

I was out early this morning to get myself a PCR test in advance of a trip tomorrow and then to take the car to the workshop to have a new wing mirror put on, the previous one having been badly cracked by a tree that suddenly moved closer while I was getting out of a tight parking space. When I left a few flakes of snow were fluttering around, and by the time I got back home it was seriously snowing and I saw the results of two accidents caused by vehicles sliding into one another. Unfortunately I have to take the car out again later today. At least the snow has now stopped.

Shocked yesterday to see my smart meter registering £4.20 for gas by last night, twice the normal. It must have been cold, even in the mild, mild West.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Increase in fuel prices kicking in as well?
