Yes, the the differences between West and East (Riding of) Yorkshire are nicely illustrated by the new "Welcome to Hull" sign...

Became very cold here during the early hours with a noticeable dip at dawn, back door temp. -3 at 9am. Cloudless blue sky, little wind and lots of sun made it all look pretty, and has melted quite a bit of the frost but I think some may remain as the temperature in shaded spots will stay very low.

Wasn’t Goole where the great divide stood in the Riding stakes? That was of course before the Gerrymandering of 1974 sacrificed tradition for votes!

Some strange bewitching scenes while out on my walk, when it was for a time simultaneously sunny and foggy! Nice weather.

Another lovely day too, following yesterday's long muddy walk - the last I'll be taking through the woods in their winter glory until the spring comes, sadly. Pollution levels are expected to break all records for London this afternoon - a warning has gone out advising against strenuous outdoor exercise.

Sounds bad S_A what combination of weather conditions and traffic brought that about?

A combination of weather conditions and traffic, precisely. Or in more technical terms, a temperature inversion. Under anticyclonic conditions (such as we're currently under) air is descending - the opposite from under cyclonic conditions. The descending air warmed by compression, reaches a layer where it spreads out, trapping air underneath it. If the surface air is moving, it will still be more polluted than were there no inversion, but at least the wind would move the pollution along, if you get my meaning. In the present situation it is completely still, and has been for the past 3 days, and the inversion is near to the surface - which is not always the case: at height an inversion causes any convective cloud to spread out as stratocumulus, known as "infill" - the bane of "cloudy" anticyclones. Hence the low-level build-up of pollutants.

Temperature inversion was evident in East Yorkshire this afternoon as I viewed it from the lofty heights of North Yorkshire. Bright blue skies overhead with a distinct yellowish haze with a sharply defined upper border on the Eastern horizon.

                        FF here...

...no, not that one - freezing fog.

Pretty grim and chilly outside, but there is one upside - numerous interesting frozen cobwebs on exterior structures.

Foggy first think this morning here - I walked to the shops rather than cycling, to comply with official recommendations to avoid vigorous exercise while high rates of atmospheric pollution pertain. With only the briefest of sunshine making a strong contrast with the past 3 days, the temperature has not exceeded 5 degs celsius today.

Foggy all day here in the Vale of York - freezing cold and just horrible. The frozen droplets on the spiderwebs on the hedges were pretty though!
                            Best regards,
                            Jonathan
