Stormy Weather II

Mostly sunny today although still rather on the chilly side due to the wind. Rain set in about 5pm - just the one very small blue bit on the weather map but, in a reversal of the usual 'sitting in the gap between rain clouds' it's right over this location.

Yes - and best make the most of it as it looks to be pretty cloudy for next week; winds should be light and temperatures around normal, however.

It's grim up North, NOT! Next week's Met Office forecast promises full sun on at least three days.

Remains to be seen if this actually pans out, of course!

A frost, and some murk for a while, during the night but just here at least nothing like the dire warnings given yesterday, and it was a bright dawn and has been sunny since, and although chilly the very light breeze means it isn't as cold as might be. Looking at the Met report (station about 20 miles west of here) it seems that not so far away they did have a nasty night of it - sharp frost and thick fog - and it has been slow to clear.

It was clear here at first light - no fog or even mist. Then at 10 am I happened to notice "steam" rising from the wooden fence boundary to our clothes drying area, and went down to have a look. Vapour was rising from the upper of the two horizontal timbers. This went on until evidently the dry air temperature directly over the fence wall rose to above that of the damp timber that was "emitting", and the steam effect halted. It struck me as a remarkable example of how tiny the margins can be between clear visibility and fog forming.

An extraordinary magical effect until a short while ago, with the tops only of assorted tower blocks and architectural iconography (viz the London Eye and The Shard) appearing in brilliant sunshine above the grey-brown murk over central London. Midday temperature up here exactly the same as yesterday's - 5 Celsius.

It looks as if high pressure is going to be in charge for at least another week.

Yes - some lovely scenes on my walk a couple of hours ago, seeing the evaporation of frost across fields with very bright sunbeams. Cold here but no wind, no cloud to speak of.

You must be on the right side of the Pennines then, OG! There was a very funny phone-in on Channel 5 this morning on the Boris Johnson "apology": one woman, indicated as phoning from West Yorkshire, strongly condemned it, saying she would never vote Conservative again; she was immediately followed by another woman who made it clear that SHE was from EAST Yorkshire, and that she had always and would always support "Boris"!
