7C - a wet and cheerless morning - the Winter Solstice went over 2 weeks ago but it doesn’t give lighter mornings yet!

Plenty of sun this morning, getting rather more overcast during the afternoon, distinctly chilly especially in the wind. Good to have a drying day though as tomorrow is looking distinctly wet.
The mornings may not be getting noticeably lighter but the afternoons don't seem to be in such a hurry to get dark as just a couple or so weeks ago, or perhaps that's the result of having some days that aren't wall to wall grey gloom. Having a clear(ish) sky as the sun gets low does make a difference.

Very annoying that weather presenters speak of showers, or "showery rain", in connection with weak frontal systems, as happened this lunchtime, when they mean intermittent rain. In the good old straightforward definitions I continue to use, showers were the product of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds, separated by clear or at any rate dry spaces, not cloud sheets of varying density associated with frontal systems that can be thick enough in places to produce rain, but not continuously. Back then rainfall, whether of the shower or frontal type, was divided firstly into torrential, heavy, medium, light and drizzle (heavy, medium and light); and secondly continuous, intermittent, occasional, and thundery.Last edited by Serial_Apologist; 07-01-22, 15:43.

A thoroughly unpleasant day. Apart from a brief let-up early afternoon it rained all day. It's now clearing away but the wind is picking up noticeably and the temperature is dropping quickly - risk of frost later, more so towards morning they reckon. Last night there was quite a frost - surfaces thickly covered and showing white at 3-30am - but at 8-30 the minimum of -4 had gone to +6 (and rain). Not a day for going out and thankfully I didn't need to, but on the plus side I have managed to get a lot of small but tiresome tasks completed and off my list, which is always a feelgood.

Although our shadows are about 8 metres long at midday at this stage of winter, (longer the further north you happen to be), I noticed a hint of warmth in the sun just now as I took a quick pre-lunch walk around the block.
