Just what I was thinking. Hardly any breeze, a hard frost(pretty feathers on the car roof) and a rosy dawn earlier, but now the temperature and wind speed have gone up and it's starting to look sullen out; the rain is due at lunchtime. I need some shopping but I can't get out yet so I think it might have to be a car job - but I'll offset that by doing a couple of charity shop drop-offs as well, heavy/bulky items I can't do on foot.

Good word that, cloughie - just looked it up. Bit of snow overnight as we await the son of Arwen - hopefully he'll be slightly kinder to us unfortunates over here than his mother proved to be ten days back.

Although for rather too many of those unfortunates I suppose it won't make that much difference as they haven't come out of the Arwen fall-out yet?

The rain belt arrived here just before midday; surprisingly, now, the wind has suddenly dropped to Force 2 after steadily building up earlier - not a good sign, as is suggests the rain belt is stalling and therefore likely to hang around for a good many hours. Temperature currently 6.5 degs C. Just how bad the winds have been across Ireland I'm waiting to hear on the news.

It started to rain here about two-thirds of the way on my walk to Sainsbury's (c. 10:30) but thankfully never became heavy, since it's very windy as well. I don't like wrestling with my brolly.

Here, as I post, temp -2C and dropped since breakfast from 5C, clouds descending, whippy rain on a vicious NE wind, and already sea birds in off Irish Sea coast way, way inland - clever, eh?

              Hi,Barra.............

About 3C here in S.Suffolk but our boiler has given up the ghost so it feels a lot colder!

Phew ,....................Suffolk and indeed anywhere in East Anglia in a nasty, truculent eastern/north eastern winter airstream............no thanks!!

Was once coaching a hockey team in the same region in early December - adolescent 1st team hopeful BOYS - BUT after 20 minutes more than one or two were literally crying, begging me to call it all off!

                  We did.

Why BOYS, Draco? Are you suggesting GIRLS would have been more robust!

At the moment it's coming from the opposite quarter but I have to say that when I went out late morning it was blooming cold none the less - the result of the quantity of damp wind rather than its direction. You're right about the particularly "bracing" quality of easterly airflows hereabouts, and it can take some getting used to, although the prolonged periods of extreme windchill I remember from decades ago are not so frequent. When I had animals to care for the frustration of warm water freezing as it was poured into drinking bottles and tiny tongues getting stuck to the nipples as they tried to drink...
The easterly airstream can be something to reckon with in summer as well. Some years ago a performance of Peter Grimes was staged on the beach at Aldeburgh in June. Wall to wall sunshine day after day had fooled many into assuming it would be pleasant t-shirt and shorts weather - the first day's rehearsal ending in hypothermia put them straight. A quick look at the regional forecast would have been instructional - but perhaps wouldn't have been believed?

Then the isobars must be tighter there than here (he said, loosening his belt a couple of notches before tackling the latest backlog of posts!).

This morning's volunteer gardening got off on the wrong foot thanks to some rain - not much quantity but being hurled at us by strong winds. It was completely unexpected, not mentioned on any of the forecasts we had looked at that morning - it was supposed to be just overcast and high winds. Fortunately, suitable clothing at this time of year for outside work includes being waterproof by default, but it did make things rather unpleasant until it cleared away about 10-30 am. More outside volunteering tomorrow, with the weather likely to be similar, although hopefully less windy, but looks as if I could have a wet walk to choir practice in the evening - not good news with the room being kept "well ventilated" and the heating probably off as well.

Today: a welcome lack of wind, sunny at times and relatively mild (bit of rain later in the day though). Tomorrow looks similar.
