The rain belt arrived here just before midday; surprisingly, now, the wind has suddenly dropped to Force 2 after steadily building up earlier - not a good sign, as is suggests the rain belt is stalling and therefore likely to hang around for a good many hours. Temperature currently 6.5 degs C. Just how bad the winds have been across Ireland I'm waiting to hear on the news.

Phew ,....................Suffolk and indeed anywhere in East Anglia in a nasty, truculent eastern/north eastern winter airstream............no thanks!!
Was once coaching a hockey team in the same region in early December - adolescent 1st team hopeful BOYS - BUT after 20 minutes more than one or two were literally crying, begging me to call it all off!
We did.

The easterly airstream can be something to reckon with in summer as well. Some years ago a performance of Peter Grimes was staged on the beach at Aldeburgh in June. Wall to wall sunshine day after day had fooled many into assuming it would be pleasant t-shirt and shorts weather - the first day's rehearsal ending in hypothermia put them straight. A quick look at the regional forecast would have been instructional - but perhaps wouldn't have been believed?

This morning's volunteer gardening got off on the wrong foot thanks to some rain - not much quantity but being hurled at us by strong winds. It was completely unexpected, not mentioned on any of the forecasts we had looked at that morning - it was supposed to be just overcast and high winds. Fortunately, suitable clothing at this time of year for outside work includes being waterproof by default, but it did make things rather unpleasant until it cleared away about 10-30 am. More outside volunteering tomorrow, with the weather likely to be similar, although hopefully less windy, but looks as if I could have a wet walk to choir practice in the evening - not good news with the room being kept "well ventilated" and the heating probably off as well.
