The locally (Devon) apocalyptic predictions of gale -lashed rain have not materialised . It’s cold ,sunny, a bit windy with the odd shower .

If they do materialise at all, it will be later. I am very concerned about the new Red Warning issued for Scotland of northerlies possibly exceeding 90 MPH from later this afternoon, through the night and into tomorrow morning. These would be 15 mph above designated Hurricane Force. Winds of this ferocity are unusual from this direction - mature trees which have grown to resist the more usual westerlies and south-westerlies do not possess the necessary root anchorage to prevent toppling. One thing for east coast dwellers to be thankful for is that these winds do not coincide with spring tides, though I would certainly not be going out in them!

They’re on their way - evening, overnight and tomorrow morning as they veer from NW to N!

Similar here - yesterday much better than forecast with plenty of sun and not too cold. Today started pretty grim but the cloud got higher and more broken and for the most part my trip into town avoided the drizzle/rain, although as always a brisk breeze made more of the precipitation than would otherwise be the case. There is some blue sky and indications of the sun's location currently, but there are also dark clouds massing which might or might not lead to rain. I think I had better get some wood inside for tomorrow - the wind direction will blow rain into the wood store and the temperatures are likely to be low with that combination of wind direction/strength and rain, so the extra warmth in the evening will be welcome. I'll need to get the cover over the woodstore, as any rain will not dry off much at this time of year; I have a roll-down arrangement so I can cover the front when necessary (when the wind is in the "wrong" direction coupled with rain), with the rest protecting the roof.

Soon as I sent my last post a squall went through and the wind blew my camellia pot over….wind speeds have now dropped again . Garden chairs now lying flat to present minimum wind target . Currently 29.32 / 993 millibars on the hall barometer.. …

Forgive me for forgetting your location, EH. If you are located in the line of the expected storm force winds it might be advisable to put those garden chairs on the lee (south) side of a decent high wall, as winds of 90+ mph can easily lift items of that size and weight, which then effectively become missiles!

Thanks - The chairs have survived worse winds than this. I don’t think it’ll get much above 50 on the south Devon coast except on the headlands . Luckily we are sheltered from Northerlies. But I don’t think the camellia can take much more. It’s too big for the pot really

As my phone predicted, we've had - and are having - snow! Some powerful wind too.

Wildest, wildest night and still now. Snow, sleet, scary winds.
                    Roof, house shaken all night.
Roads in and out blocked by huge fallen trees.

Hope everyone is keeping safe, during the bad weather. I think we are due for snow and rain today. How bad, I’m not sure.

A bright start to the morning - frosty but plenty of sun, a light breeze and a pretty dawn. Impressive cloud formations, white at first but getting more and more dark, started to move in about 9 am (one looked like a large cruise ship, or an anvil upside down, covering half the horizon and sailing across in stately fashion) and an increasing breeze started throwing periodic rain spats against the windows. At about 11 the wind suddenly increased mightily, but as the rain seemed to have cleared I decided to go out briefly anyway, and was mostly OK apart from one "stopped in my tracks" episode as I rounded a corner, and the start of rather heavy rain on the way back. Cold needless to say, and has continued unpleasant since, but seeing what other places have been getting I'm not going to grumble.

Still wild, appallingly cold, trees down all over, all buses stopped.
Promises to be another night of rage and freeze.
                          Thank you, Arwen...............................NOT

                            Yes, still pretty damn cold.

The winds did not really pick up here until mid-afternoon, and it's still blowing force 6-7 right now. I stuck my face out of the window just now to register the highest temperature of the day - 3.5 degs C - and shut it quick!

Lecky-free zone since 2pm yesterday. Freezing. Slept in the living room last night as it was the only place with heat from the log burner. Drove to Mrs C's sister's this morning to recharge the phone and had to turn back twice because of fallen trees. Power promised by 11 tonight. The wind came howling in from the north last evening for over four hours and has taken down trees all over the area. Escaped out this evening for curry and a beer. The pub was full of folk escaping the power outages.
