Thunderstorm underway as I write this - must be on the passage of the cold front.

That's not good. We had a pretty OK day here, plenty of sun and dry but suddenly getting very windy mid afternoon. The rain arrived about 8pm and is due to carry on through the night, with luck will have cleared by morning. Set to be blooming cold though according to the forecast, so I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and get my warmer clothes out; layering has worked up to now but the lack of warm outer wear is more of a problem.

There are possible warnings of severe gales just about everywhere at some point this coming weekend. How trustworthy these are will depend on a precise conjunction of meteorological events without exact precedent and therefore difficult for the algorhythms to predict - ex-hurricane Sam feeding warm air up past Newfoundland, and a bend in the Atlantic jet coinciding with a deepening low expected to cross the middle of the country on Saturday and Sunday.

Apart from floods in the North and insufficient wind power to vindicate the alternative energy proselytisers, we've been pretty lucky with climate change in this country thus far. While obviously desperately hoping this does not materialise, if these all synchronise in a certain way this could lead to "explosive cyclogenesis" as the low comes across the Irish Sea, leading to a potential October 1987 scenario. In view of this people might consider protecting their windows by bringing any garden/patio/balcony furniture, pots and hanging baskets indoors in Friday, and keeping a close watch on the official forecasts.

Edit: 13 degs C today noon - mid-October temps already!

Just back from trying out my bus pass for the first time and jolly glad it was sunny as the wind is strong and cold and I had quite a bit of waiting at draughty, but sunny, bus stops thanks to the blockages caused by petrol station queues in town. 13 or 14 struggling to stay in double digits thanks to the windchill.
I have an on-site outdoor meeting tomorrow to do with a new volunteer project starting up so I'm hoping that at least the rain holds off until we've finished as it's due to be even colder than today.

I think it will probably rain but it shouldn't be any colder than today!

I'm not so sure as there won't be much sun by the looks of things, whether it rains or not, and it was that offsetting the windchilled temps today. However nothing to be done either way and it's just a meeting, not having to stay and work, so discomfort should be limited, and might be alleviated at the end by a hot drink in the cafe.

Not a very interesting day today, I think, after yesterday’s lovely weather.

Absolutely lashing it down driven by a nasty westerly.

Today sees a couple of cold fronts tracking ESE around lows stationed to the northwest - the second will have squall lines associated with it as it makes its way across all areas, clearing the SE here mid-morning tomorrow and leaving frequent squally showers in the clear air to the NW. Saturday remains the relatively unknown in terms of how much rain will fall, and where and how strong the strongest winds will be. For the latter I would think the S coast from the Isle of Wight eastwards: how strong remains to be seen. Then on Sunday it's back again to showery breezy westerlies; next week doesn't look a lot different.

Earlier on it was pouring down. MrsBBM was walking BBMPuppy, and was caught in it. Seems to have calmed down a bit now.

Yes, the cold front cleared by 9 am - as predicted by YT - with a weak secondary in its wake, defined by one or two showers, making its way through right now. It now feels nice & warm for the start of October, but batten down the hatches for tomorrow: gales and heavy rain remain on the agenda.

Pretty good day overall today after a somewhat unpromising start. Some good sunny spells, feeling much less cold, and just the one bit of rain in the afternoon as forecast but quickly over. Having the wind drop was a relief, although it took its time doing so. Saturday's not looking too clever, errands will need to be got done in the morning.

Major downpour expected in the SE tomorrow, with gales likely, even inland - yellow warning issued: a day for catching up on unwatched DVDs. Glad I got my major weekly shop done this afternoon!
