Well I wasn't far out with my assessment of the rainfall here yesterday, St James's Park being the wettest place in England, with just over an inch. This morning brought continuous moderate rain, courtesy a wee occluded front slipping through on the westerly. Now it is cooler, probably not exceeding the 18.5 C it is right now, which is more mid to late September than early August. The immediate forecast has thunder on the cards for 4 pm, but I think they've got that wrong, convection today not being on anything like the scale of the past few days down here. Tomorrow threatens the return of heavy frequent showers and possible thunderstorms as surface convection connects with a southward extension of the low pressure trough that continues to affect Scotland and the north; then - all being well, and I am quite sanguine about this - weak high pressure ridges up from the south, through until Friday, when all is back to square one. This should at least allow for four days' decent drying weather, with temperatures up to where they should be, namely in the 23-24 C region.

Something pretty heavy smacked into my lounge window this morning - fortunately for me not smashing the pane, but not for the unfortunate wood pigeon on its back on the path below breathing its last. Opinion has it that the birds which end their lives this way think they are heading into a dark space or cave, and can't see the glass before they hit. Such collisions almost always result in quick death. I've moved the body out of sight to the far side of the garden in the hope foxes will dispatch it.

Sunshine and showers again today although the showers much more manageable, if more frequent, than yesterday. The sky has been a constant succession of black as sin through fluffy white to blue, with some rumbles a couple of hours ago although no associated action in the immediate vicinity.
Yesterday's decision to opt for train nostalgia paid off, not least to get some use out of my 5 year membership card which has already lost 18 months! It was dry to walk down and back(twice) between home and station, and puttering slowly through the countryside (one steam hauled trip, one diesel) was an excellent way to watch the 2 vicious cloudbursts whizz across the fields. Slight panic on both occasions as the strong winds meant that the rain was coming through the open windows between the carriages( in considerable quantity on the windward side), so staff were running through the carriages to haul them up - passengers had dealt with the ones above the seats. All very LvB Pastoral as the sun gave way to storm gave way to sun again, and not a bad way to spend a birthday; the girl in the ice-cream van gave me an extra flake in my 99 as well. Simple pleasures...
Less happily, it looks as if blight has arrived on my tomatoes.

While the best of all possible weather pertains here in the SE today () further north it is probably cloudier and breezier, and over Scotland the thundery showers are now restricted. From later on today the cold front sweeping in from the NW will bring a belt of rain, fragmenting the further SE it goes; this rain not being expected to affect the SE as the associated cloud belt grinds to a halt over E Anglia and the Home Counties on Thursday. The associated low to the north is expected to spawn a little brother, with its frontal system sweeping across all areas over the weekend but, again, not really affecting the S. Temperatures will be about what is to be expected at this time of year.

Next week is expected to be rather on the cool side as the Azores High establishes residence to the west of Ireland, with a moderate NW/WNW flow bringing temperatures not exceeding 20 C in London, with the usual cumulus with stratocumulus infill making for cloudyish afternoons, and enough buoyancy to create showers over Scotland and the NW, particularly over high ground.

It's not much of a summer if you like it hot, but it suits me just fine, I have to say. When we think what is and has been happening in various other parts of the world...

Warm and sunny today and likely to be more of the same tomorrow. As you say SA, however indifferent a summer it has seemed to many so far things could be so much worse.
The weekend edition of the local rag which I have in real paper form has an agricultural section and it was interesting to see that the weather hasn't been as much of a problem for the farmers as for holiday makers and the public in general. The barley crop is looking pretty good, and the pea crop is reckoned to be the best for many a year - much work needed to ensure the capacity of the processing plant can match the quantity of crop coming in, as they work on such a very time critical basis for the frozen pea sector and harvesting is 24/7 during the campaign.

Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.

Let's hope that that finally changes...

                  a wee occluded front

Well at least it wasn't an occluded wee front - that could have been painful!

(It took me a good 10 seconds to twig that one, though!)

A lovely summer's day yesterday - warm, sunny with a pleasant breeze - which brought the visitors in at work, but today looks rather indifferent although still warm and probably staying dry. The veg patch could do with some rain especially the climbing beans whose foliage has been exposed to the drying winds and sun more than the low growing crops.

Your best prospect of rain will probably be on Sunday, Ooo! Down here I wasn't that surprised to hear of stoppages for rain at Lords this morning, notwithstanding the forecasters' predictions of dry weather.
