Woops! direct strike within 100 metres, really explosive thunder - probably off the anvil. Rain still holding off here

West and northwest London is really getting the lion's share of this storm system at the moment, with the odd cloud-to-ground flash coming off the anvil to the east. This is quite a big system, with decaying and generating cells along its length, which is from Coulsdon to the SW to Islington to the north - a line convergence storm rather than an MCS - which is when they form their own mini circulation system and keep self-generating: most ground-up thunderstorms last not more than 20 minutes from first to final discharges; this one has new cells forming along the convergence line, replacing those dying. It's fascinating observing where the latest spherics are taking place - as long as one is not directly under them!

The rain will not be long in coming here now - there are more spherics now approaching from the south, but I think we're going to get off lightly here.

Yes just had 2 of the most energetic thunder claps / lightning flashes ( correction, 3) I can ever remember, simultaneous flash and shattering clap… amid still torrential rain (it’s been going on monsoon-wise at least 30 minutes now)

The main problem with these storms is that they are only moving very slowly, so that anyone under one has to sort of endure it from the moment it breaks until it burns itself out. I am expecting lots of flooding reports from W London on the 6.30 BBC1 news.

Another rather tiresome day, not actually raining but not dry either, grey and muggy. It looks as if we'll probably miss any of the excitement you folk are reporting (good thing it didn't happen last night?) the nearest equivalent is heavy showers and even those aren't that certain.

101 mm rain fell during that hour and a half in Hammersmith this afternoon, 97 mm in Kensington: that's pretty close to if not exceeding rainfall records for London in the time line, rainfall of tropical intensity. This would count as a severe thunderstorm on the basis of the amounts of precipitation, rather than frequency of lightning strikes, which were not especially noteworthy, although there were anecdotal reports of strikes, of which we'll probably hear more tomorrow. Yet not a drop fell here!!!

Yes. We had those ones, later on in the afternoon!

Going to have more today, I think as well but next week, MrsBBM tells me we will have temperatures of 30C! Probably that high pressure that will be coming from the Azores?

Should hopefully remain dry today, but yes, it's going to warm up from tomorrow onwards. Probably be warmest in the west, furthest away from the influence of the North Sea, which should temper the heat hereabouts somewhat, thank goodness!

Rather tricksy weather today. When the sun was out it was quite warm but a brisk northerly breeze made for chilly intervals when cloud took over. Not so much of a problem when doing the volunteer gardening today but not so nice for sitting outside have a bite of lunch after when the sun was very much not out. The drying breezes and lack of rain mean that I have some watering to do later on in my own garden.

Seems like a reasonably good day in prospect with some fine early morning sunshine. The forecast 'gentle breeze', however, is a good deal stronger than that which is a pity.

It's described as a "rather brisk breeze" for the forecast here, and given the northerly direction that translates into definitely chilly. It might clear up later but currently grey which adds to the coolth, and lowers the spirits.

Sunny and windy - tho' wind that could never be described as chilly! Very nice at 21.

Likewise here. The forecaster's "promise" just now that tomorrow will be cloudier cold hardly be more unlikely, however!
