Same weather, except for being very muggy and hazy here, with the odd spit and spot of rain from a claggy stratus fractus sky - the latter making it very difficult to ascertain as to what is coming along at higher levels: there have been a few isolated atmospherics dotted around the south in the past hour, the nearest over Sheppey. Three neighbouring gardens have opened under a charitable scheme for the public to enjoy for a tenner - I passed by earlier and people were queuing; while it would be nice to go I would prefer not to if I were the only person allowed in: it would be like, how long are others patiently waiting?

Rather a gloomy day, I think!

Even worse this morning. All of the above plus it's now raining and it's not just chilly but cold. People walking passed wearing their winter clothing. Heating on!

          .

... in all this dismalness, nice to remember that on this day 45 years ago [28 June 1976] the UK’s highest temperature for the month, 35.6C, was recorded. This was during a record heatwave of 18 consecutive days with temperatures at 30C or more in southern England - the hottest, driest, and sunniest summer in the UK’s history.

I still recall struggling across a parched Kensington Gardens thinking 'I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it... ' Mind you, I think I had glandular fever as well at the time

I've got very many happy memories of that glorious summer. I had my 22nd birthday that summer and it really was a case of 'bliss was it in that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven'.

Two days later (June 30 1976) a work colleague retired at the age of 65. He had been with the company for 50 years, and although it meant little to me then, I can say I've worked with someone who started his career in 1926!

Our daughter was born in July 1976.
I spent ages watering the lawn, not realizing that grass is very resilient and will survive almost any spell of hot weather. (It soon recovered).
Plenty of good things happened in the 1970s, but perhaps we didn't always realize it at the time.
Very different weather today - murky, misty and muggy, 16.5 C with spits and spots of rain.

I'm glad that the weather this morning was good as we drove to the Knavesmire in York for our long delayed balloon flight! It was clear at 5.30am but by the time we were in the air, it was cloudy. Still absolutely brilliant though!
                  Best regards,
                  Jonathan

Whereas here it has turned pretty wet, following what appeared a promising start: nothing drastic, but still too rainy to venture to the shops on the bike. Those shops will probably be crowded with people stocking up in preparation for marathon TV viewing sessions this afternoon.

Over on its west coast, right now Canada seems to be going through by far its hottest weather on record, with temperatures into the mid to upper 40s celsius!

                              .

... the man building a new small shed for our dustbins decided to defer the final coats of paint. Boy, was he right! A sudden monsoon-like torrent for about fifteen minutes, the gutters brimming.

Painting will recommence on Thursday, he promises

Rain seems to be sitting squarely over Wimbledon and environs and hardly anywhere else. None here today. Hard luck for those with tickets.
