Some welcome rain overnight and much cooler today - and tomorrow is forecast to be positively chilly as well as wet. I can get the last of my veg plants out now but will need to watch out for slimy munchers who will be hungry after the heat and dry.

After a little overnight rain, it feels very warm again here with the temperature rapidly climbing upwards. It feels very close with barely a breath of wind. Indoor temperature at midnight in my listening room was 26.7 degrees. Some don't like it but I feel perfectly fine with it! Once had a night-time temperature of 29 degrees in there after a prolonged heatwave and have to admit that it brought me out in a sweat while all the time I was willing it to reach 30."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Rain aplenty over our location on the northward-shifting boundary edge between hot air over eastern Europe and cool air stretching south from Iceland to Portugal, and notwithstanding the colder surface temperatures under the rain band spiral this looks likely to continue until Monday. One whopper of a thunderstorm is now firing off over northern Holland and Belgium; it will be interesting to see of this moves west in the next couple of hours - already there's been thunder on the Essex and Kent sides of the M25.

It has been very wet here, and also chilly. The temperature isn't due to improve but with luck it shouldn't rain today. The garden is looking shell-shocked and the tomatoes aren't very happy - fingers crossed blight will stay away, but I'll be out with the seaweed spray just in case; even if it doesn't prevent the blight it provides a boost for the plants which is always a good thing.
