Yeah, but outside, over-wintering fuchsias look so forlorn and apparently lifeless before they begin to bud, one can get very close to chucking them!

Luckily, we have a couple of hardy fuchsias permanently planted which come back every year without fail.
Still rather early to assume the worst?

        That's it!

Brilliantly sunny down here today, in the middle of a nice friendly anticyclone, with very little wind - 8 degrees C at noon, barometer 1035 millibars!

          Grey, still, cold.
At first light - ha! - thick mist, now slowly dispersed.

Thanks for the encouragement. The roots may have survived. They've been out in the sun today.

The rate at which they show signs of life depends on how far down the top growth has been killed. If buds have to come from the top of the rootstock they can take quite a while to get active, and are also very susceptible to attack by slugs and snails, and can get knocked back by late frosts. In a normal year I don't reckon to do much with overwintered pots of 'tender' plants, other than clearing out dead leaves, keeping an eye out for chomping pests and protecting from excess wet, until well into April.
Back on topic, overnight sharp frost, but not the morning murk that was originally forecast. It's wall to wall blue and sun again, although chilly. Definitely a mood booster.

It looks settled all week, but in all probability turning colder by next weekend as the high transplants NW, sucking air down from the Arctic - how cold remains to be worked out. Lovely today, with the process of drying out making this afternoon's stroll in Belair Park particularly pleasant.

What a difference a day makes.
From brilliant warm sunshine yesterday to thick mist/fog this morning, though the sun is trying hard to break through.

Indeed. Winter is highly likely to make a return.

From what MrsBBM tells me too.
