Why is our weather not been very inspiring, where other people’s has been either quite dramatic or snow bound?!?!?

Braced for what is forecast as a hefty wet / freezing etc etc w/end.
BBC saying that January was the overall coldest for 10 yrs.

Careful what you wish for BBM!
Weather coming from the East is often less than good news in these parts in winter, so it'll be a case of seeing what happens. The strong winds won't be welcome whatever as they make everything so much colder.

Indeed - a blast of Continental Arctic air (A1 type) expected to last most of next week! CA air is always the coldest in the south since, unlike the main source of our cold, which reaches us from the north (P1/P2-type airstreams), this hasn't had a long stretch of ocean to cross to warm it up to some extent by the time of reaching our shores, but only the short fetch of the southern North Sea, which, in addition, happens to be at its coldest at this time of the year. This was predicted by some observers back in December, when sudden stratospheric warming was noted. For reason which, frankly, I don't really understand, stratospheric warming has the opposite effect of cooling the lower layers - part of it as I understand being down to one of the effects of SW being to create dramatic kinks in the polar jet stream, causing it to buckle, this then leading to bands of high pressure forming as blocs to the north, with lows diverted to the south sucking low level air down from the north east. The further east the colder the source and therefore the air reaching us: in this case the origins are over northern Siberia, which is as cold as it gets.

Indeed yes! I think we could be heading for another Beast from the East, plus we may be getting our first taste of snow, tomorrow evening!!!

Lovely pink tinge to the clouds first thing this morning. Now bright sunshine and washing is out, but showers due later.

We’ve had some of those already - they’ll be on their way to you with a gentle WNWesterly! Otherwise not a bad morning - the birds seem to be heralding spring not far off!

Damp(due to lots of overnight rain) and rather indeterminate this morning, but the cloud is high and not too thick so the sun might show its face in due course as forecast. Rain unlikely and temperatures fairly mild as there is little wind. I'd best make the most of it to get shopping in as the next couple or three days don't look good, even if it doesn't snow.

Air sharpening here as the day develops. On highest eastern slopes, new snow fell overnight. I sense serious cold.
                      Dare I prune anything?

I think people will be in for a rude awakening on Sunday, as they're probably not aware of what we're in for next week, not having experienced anything as cold as this will be, and for so long, for quite a number of years. I might check to see when was the last time. I've dug out my thick long vests and ditto trousers reserved for freezing and below. As a friendly, I'm going to bet on 10 cm of snow for London by Monday night, 20-25 for S Essex and Kent, the more the further east.

We had our windows cleaned this morning: now I can see what weather is coming more clearly; and light levels have improved enormously indoors!

Only if you want to kill it? Better to leave something for the frost to hit above the growing heart, and sort it out in a few weeks time when one hopes any frost won't be of the killing kind - or not to rootstocks anyway.

Well, weirdly, this evening, as I do a late prowl, it is FAR milder than in mid-afternoon. Wind SE, quite bold, but...but...
