I'm hoping it will now be dry from now until the end of the weekend, given that next week looks likely to be very unsettled and wet, rendering the nearby woods impassable. The lady in one of the other flats here has asked me if I have a key to unblock her radiator!

The forecast 'occasional showers' turned out to be rather more frequent than that this morning and the bits in between weren't what one might call dry. It cleared after lunch and some sun and blue sky has been sighted. As there was also a bit of a breeze I put some washing out for a gentle flap. It won't get dry but enough moisture and creases will be removed to make it worth doing.

Wall-to-wall stratocumulus grey all day here, more Novemberish than Octoberish - temperature not exceeding a raw 11 C. Ah well, a very nice young woman, Columbian, has moved in upstairs. Some flowers had been delivered for her, which I had taken in. She had on a pair of flat soled shoes in a black and white chequered pattern, and I told her it was the first time I had seen a pair of shoes made out of a policeman's helmet - to which she replied, "Oh, I was told they'd been made from chef's trousers!" I can tell we're going to get on really well!

Most of England is in for a prolonged downpour tonight and tomorrow, courtesy Storm Barbara, coming up from Spain, and Portugal, where it has reportedly caused lots of damage from strong winds and heavy rain - probably making up big time for drought conditions that had been predominating up to this year. With cold sea currents offshore Portugal is historically prone to prolonged dry conditions in any case, though with the weakening of the Atlantic Gulf Stream the tendency is now for the Atlantic jet stream to swoop down further south than has been the case mostly in the past, and this is going to have strong effects on their climate, as it is on ours.
