Grey, precipitation all day of varying intensity(not helped by the wind) and perishing cold. Not much fun at work where all the doors have to be open - constantly mopping the floor where the rain has blown in, and struggling to keep warm. Very few visitors - not surprisingly, and pass holders cancelled bookings so even fewer - so few distractions and limited work.

Grey mostly all day with keen NNW wind and spots of light rain this evening. Mid-October temperatures.

As Arkwright would say ‘It’s been a funny kind of day’ - bit of rain early on then brighter but grey clouds and a fair breeze but sunny intervals - wouldn’t have been surprised to see more rain - around 15C most of the day.

Lack of sun kept the temperature right down today, but on the plus side it was dry and the wind has dropped quite a bit. The sky is clearing now so I suspect it's going to be cold tonight. Yesterday the wood stove went on after a miserable day getting damp and cold at work, but I think tonight I can probably get by without.

Certainly a northerly wind blowing yesterday, down these parts. Quite cold!

                      Hoping today will be better!

Below 10 degrees overnight - poor tomatoes! Somewhat indeterminate so far today, not very warm but should stay dry at least until the afternoon. Keep forgetting it's August Bank Holiday, for the last 12 years this has been the second day of a weekend event at work, looking after a couple of thousand visitors,(somewhat fewer on the Sunday) and wondering if the BB memorial flight will be able to do its flypast in the afternoon. Very hard work and sometimes rather too much of an adrenaline rush when something goes wrong,(such as gazebos blowing away or the parking fields getting flooded) but an annual highlight. With the event cancelled only a few staff are needed for 'normal' opening so most of us will also miss out on the financial benefits of working both a Sunday and a Bank Holiday.

Only 15 on the thermometer but quite warm and muggy doing a bit of gardening in sporadic sunshine. A splendid peacock butterfly fluttered by.

It went down to 7.5 C here last night, and is still struggling to recover. I was thinking of people such as yourself when visitor troubles were reported from Hever Castle - members of the public complaining and becoming abusive to staff when asked to queue longer, socially distance and wear face masks.

We've been fortunate so far in terms of visitor behaviour, but that has a lot to do with not being a major tourist attraction, so queues don't really build up. Interestingly we all remarked at our end of season debrief last year that the attitudes of our visitors were changing, especially on busy event days, and that each year we were facing more difficult situations, and increasingly unreasonable expectations. Rather too much entitlement and not enough personal responsibility all round in my view.
It is also difficult I think for visitors to understand that attractions aren't the same as supermarkets, which in most cases seem to be back to virtually normal working judging by what happens round here and, already irritated by prebooking etc are not minded to be patient or try and understand why things are different. Ironically for all the way 'everyone' is so attached to their devices and tethered to social media and the internet there doesn't always seem to be much attempt to inform themselves before arriving, and as always they take it out on those who are neither responsible for the situation nor in a position to wave a wand and make everything better.
