Well, that was a much more pleasant walk than anticipated - rain stopped after five minutes then sun and blue sky... still windy though.

The frontal rain has now passed, leaving a legacy of thin drizzle. Must get out for me provisions before that forecast wind gets going!

I am fortunate in that the local topology largely protects my home from the current windy conditions. Indeed, the Hornbeam snd Hawthorn trees in my garden are hardly wavering, while the trees of the woodland above and beyond are rather more disturbed.

The rain eased up around lunchtime and there are now some glimpses of sun and blue sky, but the wind is really winding itself up. Not looking forward to tonight when it's due to reach its peak - I don't sleep well at the best of times so can do without noises of as things get shifted around. Which reminds me I'll need to put the bungy strap on the black bin; the lid has a rubbish design that catches the wind too easily and then the lifting lid flings the whole thing on its back as I don't have enough rubbish to hold it down. The strap doesn't always stop it falling over but at least stops the contents coming out - it's the recycling bin so loose paper etc.

There can't be that many heavy rocks around suitable for keeping that lid down, in your area, unless they're part of someone's artificial landscaping scheme!

One thing that's noticeable in summer in this very green and pleasant area is how much shelter trees in full leaf offer from strong winds - though that means those trees exposed to the full force suffering the greater damage.

                  Very much so!

                  Much better after yesterday.

But what a hooley it blew last night! Fortunately not much in the way of visible damage to nearby hedges and trees, which one supposed must be getting used by now to unseasonal gales catching them, so that much already weak branchwork has been shed previous to last night's episode.

The rest of today - and tomorrow morning the further south and east you happen to be - offer the best of the week's weather, after which a very wet, and possibly thundery if not windy Friday is expected, as the last in the current family of depressions crosses the middle of the country, with temperatures falling to, or below what they should be at this time of year, for the first time in a couple of months, which will be quite a shock. Tonight promises to be the first night in over a month when minimum temperatures are expected to fall to levels they actually should be - 11/12 degrees C. But worry not! After Tuesday, daytime temperatures should recover to their norms, which in early September are the same as those for late June.

Well flints can get quite sizable but they don't tend to be useful shapes for sitting on top of things, and if it did fall off it would likely shatter into lots of very sharp pieces, so for now I'll stick with the strap to keep the lid shut and accept that the whole thing may fall over on occasion - as indeed it did yesterday and during the night.

Rather overcast and cloudy today, with quite a chill in the air.

Started raining when I set out on a walk at 11:45 and hasn't stopped since.

Chucked it down all morning but recently stopped - due to return this evening.

A definite overtone of autumn in the air first thing this morning. The sun made a brief appearance and it became pleasantly warm, but soon clouded over and felt much cooler; enough of a breeze to do the necessary for the washing. Due to rain early evening and possibly a bit during the first part of the night.

Now pouring with rain here and feels much cooler than earlier in the day. Definitely an autumn feeling as so often happens at this late stage of August.
