Sometimes in thundery breakdown situations - as today - it is very difficult to get details of location, direction and intensity of development accurate. For instance, today's forecast predicted an outside chance of the elevated convection that produced this morning's downpour over Kent and East Anglia re-triggering this evening. I watched the mid-height cloud disappearing east to be replaced by completely clear skies this morning, and then surface-generated cumulus bubbling up to the north of London. The latter surface-based convection produced quite intense thunderstorms across the Midlands and Yorks/Lancs this evening. Meanwhile the elevated convection that had been predicted as having a low risk of returning to the SE did in fact return - a couple of the showers turned thundery over Kent and Sussex, and we actually had a shower of very large raindrops from convective altocumulus while holding a resident's association meeting in the garden here!

One fascinating aspect of the past 3 days has been my relative success in keeping temperatures in my flat lower than outdoors. The outside temperature (shade) reached 28.5 here this afternoon, and it was pleasant returning from a 3-mile circular walk to be able to cool off, once inside. It was the other residents at the meeting who began to notice that it was getting chillier, and I was surprised to find myself met with a wall of heat coming from inside when I opened my front door! The temperature outside had fallen to 20 C, while that inside was 25 C - it had merely seemed cool, earlier, by virtue of contrast! Now I have drawn back all the curtains and blinds, and flung open every door and window to try and get things cooling off before I go to bed.

It was muggy last night. In the early evening yesterday, rain, yes rain! More today too!

A couple of thunder rumbles, a lightning flash, and two very brief power blips last night. This morning is overcast and much cooler with a sprinkle of rain early on. A wander down the garden nibbling alpine strawberries and tiny mangetout and french beans was a real pleasure, and there is the prospect of being able to do some gardening later. The forecast for wind isn't helpful though - over 30mph won't do large tender leaves any good.

Blowing hard up here, snaps of fierce rain, and bright sun.
Checking already staked plants every half hour - fear for some of them! Not much more I can do.

About 10 minutes after I posted this, the rain stopped and then sun came out - perfectly timed for my walk.

Heavy, humid, rain soaked, grey...... perfect weather for R4's Any Answers......(usually far more diverting - and often very moving, last few months... than AQ itself...)....

Hope for walk weather later.... see how Mr. & Mrs Magpie are doing on the old farm stables.... they always sit very close, preen each other, unusual in Magpie pairs after the breeding season.... very, very cute... I wonder if one is old or ailing......

The Sun's Out Now! Better get out there myself with Guardian Weekend.......

Well, sure as toads rule the earth, won't have to do any plant watering tonight?!!
                    Crikey!

Utterly dreich - southern fells from here more or less invisible, rain bucketing down and SW wind driving it in billows.

Well it took some doing but we appeared to have managed it! A socking great wall to wall belt of rainy stuff moving across East Anglia, did we get any here - nope, apart from about 5 mins of indifferent rain drops, many of which didn't even reach the ground thanks to the dreadful wind. At one point early evening I stood outside watching a hole in the cloud pass over, while on the horizon I could see that a neighbouring village was having its evening watering done for it...
Windspeeds in the high 30s(mph) to look forward to tomorrow, so more watering to be done despite the lower temperatures.

We've had all of 1.5 mm of rain so far today. 3-4 degrees cooler than this time yesterday.

I am quite sure the reason for this lack of rain is down to people not washing their cars any more.

Around here, people seem to be washing their cars MORE frequently, possibly because (a) they've completed all their gardening and/or home improvement projects or (b) they're still trying to find reasons for not starting them. Car washing being an outdoor activity, it also reduces the chances of chaps being asked to help around the house generally or chided for watching too much daytime TV (especially 'Loose Women').

Another fine day. I thought we were going to have rain? Alexa just said chance of showers. Low of 11 and a high of 18. Nice!

We have had a wild, wild, wild night, rain on roof that woke me twice and wind that buffeted.
AND it's still happening as I post.

And STILL those wretched biker processions....typical weekend noise, pollution, danger. 'Stuff everyone else so long as I get my thrill.'
