Is this what they call 'anticyclonic gloom'? If memory serves, a few years ago Aberdeen suffered a whole month with virtually no sunshine when there was a similar pressure pattern. I've got a different walk lined up for today - a mixture of suburban streets, field tracks and woodland, passing our local medical centre at one point (might be useful )

Grey, with the promise of precipitation seasoning, and coolth. Not the best for coping with current circumstances, especially as I have to venture out at some point to try and get items missing from the shop yesterday.

Not really - the gloom is all down to that front introducing colder air from the north hanging around and not wanting to go anywhere fast. If it weren't for that front we'd be under a half sky of broken stratocumulus, borne on the north-easter. Anticyclonic gloom can occur at any time of year, and is not dependent on the presence of frontal systems in the mix. It is of two main types: the low stratus "clag" similar to today's, usually the result of surface fog that has just risen to become stratus and hasn't had sufficiently strong sun to "burn it off"; and the situation in which surface convection-produced cumulus rises to the level of the temperature inversion, and spreads out sideways to become stratocumulus, or what is often described as "infill", to form an impenetrable mat, which will then last until sunset. You will notice the latter with a certain amount of irritation on those days when you go out with a rug to sunbathe on. It has been beautifully sunny up to that point and you thought to yourself, hmmm, I'm going to take advantage of this. After a couple of minutes you notice that cumulus cloud; it is coming closer and closer to where the sun is. Calculating the speed of the cloud's approach, you figure that it will be past in a few minutes, and then that nice-looking gap before the next cloud comes along will make it worthwhile staying put. So you wait, and a few minutes later you're wondering why its taking so long for the sun to come out again; and it's then that you notice that yes, the cloud has moved, but while doing so it has expanded in size, spreading out at its edges; and just when you think the sun is about to re-appear, that bit of the cloud gets added onto. Meanwhile, that gap before the next, also expanding cloud comes along, is getting smaller and smaller.

Much brighter here this morning. I plan to walk into town to buy a few items, possibly pop into the library, which is closing this evening for an unspecified period, then walk home along the promenade.

                Cloudless sky here this morning.
Chilly, but worth wrapping up and being in the garden later or at a socially acceptable distance from passers by on the front bench for coffee later on.

A glorious golden sunrise and it's due to stay cloudless and sunny all day. The wind is the downer - due east in these parts isn't good news(except for drying things). It's a reminder though of how things used to be years ago when this sort of weather was quite common here at the beginning of the year. Less pleasant was when overcast conditions got 'stuck' and the biting cold wasn't leavened by sun - folks got very grumpy! It made for difficulties with newly emerging/sown crops as well - dessicating winds with added soil blow aren't good news for anything with leaves or without roots!

There's a lot of comment on weather sites about the cleansing effect the drop in air travel and industrial activity is having on the atmosphere: I don't think I've ever seen the visibility as clear in an easterly as it is here today - you could almost be up in the Pennines! Easterly airstreams are usually highly polluted by air sourced from the Benelux industrial areas. That said, at 8.5 Celsius it is a bit chilly for late March, and the wind is quite strong, a disincentive to getting out on the cycle other than for domestic purposes.

It is certainly lovely to have the full effect of a cloudless blue sky without the haze and crisscrossing of contrails. I find it upsetting to have such unavoidable evidence of environmental damage.

Wow! Brother of the Beast from the East out tonight up here. Real slog back against it - but bracing and apart from a crazy cyclist banging down the steep path in almost pitch black without any lights on....fine!!

This easterly has been blowing now for 24 hours or more - Positive - it is dry but not overwarm - but then there's nowhere much to go!

I always find temperature a lot different since having cancer. If people say it’s ok outside, I go out and find it’s not, etc. However, me and MrsBBM went out for a saunter yesterday afternoon, and she did put two fleeces on, because of the bitterness. I duly did, and found I was duly protected!

The weather today looks much about the same, so I will do similar as yesterday. It always does me the power of good, going for a saunter.

When the weather is like this the critical thing is keeping the wind out. Garments with zips that don't have a fly(flap) behind will soon demonstrate their weak spot! I have a good quality waterproof jacket(a star charity shop find - I could never justify what it would have cost new) which, when the sun is doing its thing, will be adequate over a good warm woolly, provided I add a suitable scarf and some gloves - and something to mop up runny eyes and nose caused by the wind!
It wasn't as clear early on as yesterday and there is quite a bit of wispy high level cloud, but nothing to obscure the sun. I rather overdid the gardening yesterday so will have to resist the urge to get out and carry on preparing the new veg bed - this drying wind is excellent for making the claggy bits workable so I can get compost tickled in for the worms to do their stuff.
