The weather brightened during the afternoon so I made the most of it by shifting vulnerable things in the garden and continuing the work on moving the compost heap. Unfortunately one vulnerable thing - namely the shed roof - I can't do anything about other than hope for the best. Quite a lot of the nails holding the roof sheets on were loosened in a very bad storm a couple of years ago and although I've hammered back what I can safely reach in the interim it really needs screwing down as they keep coming loose again.

Beautiful and spring-like here in London too - only 10 degs celsius but feeling warmer than that, now that the sun's heat is getting more apparent. Lots of people sitting outside the tea room at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Still no sign of the turmoil to come.

Supposed to be four days! I've just driven a 12 mile journey where I could barely see the road markings.

Having had a good night's sleep(by my standards) I'm not happy to find that the worst is yet to come. I had hoped that today would be a gradual winding down rather than having to watch and worry.

Reporting safe down here, despite a wild raging night. Although Ciara seems to have subsided now, we still getting strong gusts.

It was a lovely sunny day here yesterday in the East Riding, we even ate lunch in the conservatory for the first time since October. However, the storm started about 8pm and the rain is still falling and the wind still gusting. It's intermittently very dark too. No allotment for us today!

Very strong winds up here with lashing rain and dark enough to need the lights on. A tree across the road looks very precarious and looks a candidate to topple over.

Stocked up on food so won't be going anywhere today.

Ciara blowing here, after yesterday’s lovely lull - forecast to strengthen during the day.

We’ll see a lot more coastal erosion on the E Yorks coast this year, I expect. Walking to the end of Spurn Point during late summer a few years ago we watched some workmen carefully laying concrete flagstones to prepare an access road. When we returned the following summer there was no evidence of their work at all, the whole lot had been washed away during the winter storms. It’s a coastline that’s severely threatened by erosion. One benefit is that the coastal erosion is exposing fossilised tree remains dating from a time when there were more inland fresh water lakes in the area (4,000-12,000 years ago) which could potentially provide some evidence for investigating rising sea levels in the area in previous eras.
