Probably it was lower than that when sleet was falling - which is rarely at or above 3C; only in dry air in springtime, when in heavy showers borne on very cold air aloft, rain can fall with enough force to bring the snow it originated from down fast enough to reach ground level before having time to melt, even at low altitudes. Thus those occasions when temperature can dramatically fall as much as 10C in a matter of minutes when a shower or cold front passes.

Today very sunny - and very chilly: probably warmer (at 5 degrees C) than an average mid-December temperature, though?Don’t cry for me

Erm.......pavements?
Anyway, a white Xmas now seems to be ruled out wherever one is, provided it's in the UK. What we appear to have is a north Atlantic covered in its entirely by primary or secondary low pressure systems, whether deepeng or filling up, and resembling a lot of poached eggs frying in one of those large catering frying pans, with the Asiatic winter high large but kept well back to the east this year (so far). This means that the lower atmosphere is at around sea surface temperature levels, but cold above - there being very little feeding in and admixing of tropical air - so, unsettled, with lots of rain around, sometimes accompanied by strong winds (especially this coming Thursday), but temperatures as would be expected for December (4C in N Scotland to 8C on the Kent to Cornwall coast by day, and down to from 2C to 4C respectively by night, with the odd slight frosty nighs when fog forms between weather systems.
What a contrast with last year, when prolonged dry weather allowed me to walk the woods well into the winter for the first time since moving here.
