Unbearably hot yesterday in the room I use for work in Winchester - even with windows open and fans going.

Astonishing lightshow here last night between about 10pm and 11pm. I watched for about 40 mins - probably didn't do my eyes much good with some of the flashes, but the main and brightest focus was conveniently screened by a tree in a neighbouring garden - and the thing that most struck me was the lack of noise. There was a bit of thunder grumble, but no lightning cracks, even with the few 'normal' sky to earth flashes. Mostly it seemed to be balls, sheets, and horizontal flashes, and a few which seemed to go up from ground level.
Impossible to get more than a couple of hours sleep as the desultory and short-lived rain added stickiness to the high temperature and over-charged atmosphere.

On the drive back via M25, my car thermometer peaked at 38.5 C , unless I missed a 39 .
It’ll be soon enough back to normal, whatever that is.
The RAH won’t be much fun tonight temperature wise though, I guess.
The Met Office said a new record temperature for the month was set at 38.1C in Cambridge on Thursday afternoon, beating the previous record of 36.7C set in Heathrow in 2015.
