I've just had to completely change clothes after my cycle ride of 1 mile home coincided with the passage of the cold front, the rain being heavy enough in those 5 minutes to penetrate my quilted coat and the jacket underneath to soak my shirt sleeves! If I'd waited another half hour... !!!

With the exception of 1963 is this the worst first four months - and it is going to be five so five months - of a weather year in the London area since records began?

      Because it feels like it.

Trees in the city parks most odd...horse chestnuts flowering very early, the native hardwoods weeks late.

Very peculiar weather in the Highlands. Yesterday one minute we were sitting out in the garden - within thirty minutes we were back inside with the central heating on. Really cold when we walked the dog at 8.30 this morning.

Well the temperature today has reached... 1 degree higher than the mean for January!

Heating went back on yesterday, and I've just brought some wood in for the stove to cheer things up this evening after a grim day of excessive rain and cold. Must mean summer's soon to arrive......

Monday looks as if it's going to be quite a shocker for this far into the year, with the entire SE and E Anglia under a slow moving weather front bringing heavy continuous rain, up to a couple of inches, hurricane-force northerly winds along the E coast and N coast of Kent and gales inland (official yellow warning, but is this enough? What about Spring tides??), and even a possibility of snow over the Chilterns, N and S Downs!

This must be the worst start to a weather year since 1963.

I am spending huge amounts of time asleep to escape from it and a problem with my eye.

I'll come back to you on that. Once the very cold start to 1963 was out of the way, it wasn't too bad, from personal memory. In general though, weather patterns have changed radically since the 1980s, with what had been exceptions, eg northerly outbreaks, now becoming the norm, eg our "benevolent" climate-moderating south-westerlies, being much less frequent than was once the case.

Sorry to hear about Lat’s eye. I hope Betty Martin is not involved? (Fake news joke).

Tomorrow's forecast for up here looks truly dreadful: heavy rain, windy and daytime temps of no more 4 degrees! Apart from a couple of good days last weekend, we've never got out of winter in this area.

...and I think the northerly outbreaks are appearing later.

My memory is that it stayed winter but then once the thaw came things progressed in a reasonable fashion. We certainly didn't have a summer heatwave suddenly inserted and withdrawn to be followed by a return to late winter.
