It even felt quite warm in the sunshine after lunch, when I did a bit of leaf clearance, sweeping them into the shaded borders to become leaf mould. Hang onto your hats over the next 48 hours as winds increase to gales widely, then shift to the north-west, bringing temperatures 4-5 degrees below early January norms.

The clouds that appeared when I last posted disappeared quite quickly and the rest of the day was sun and blue sky. The breeze continued to make itself felt but indoors and in the car the sun also made itself felt.
There were wind warnings for Wednesday and Thursday but they aren't showing now, although the forecast windspeeds are in the forties and rising from tomorrow afternoon.

Yes, there are winds gusting to over 50 mph forecast for approaching midnight here in London on NYE. I wonder if or how this could affect the famous fireworks on the S Bank, for which tens of thousands will have paid to attend. Next week's weather does indeed now look very cold for the UK, especially from Weds to Fri, and even after that temps remain 2-3 degs below averages until the middle of the month, which is as far as official predictions go.

It is blowing harder by the hour now, but still fine here - I shall keep the curtains open, binoculars at the ready, on the assumption that tonight's fireworks extravaganza on the South Bank goes ahead: I try to watch it every year from my perch, six miles to the south, at 250 feet above sea level. The bangs take about half a minute to reach here. I have just made the last-ever entry into my personal daily weather diary.

I shall be interested to see(or rather hear!) if anyone is stupid enough to set off fireworks here. Wind peaking at 45mph so far, but forecast to be much higher tomorrow morning - perhaps it's just as well it's a public holiday.

Did you enjoy the mayoral knight's pyrotechnical delight?

Very few fireworks (that I heard, at any rate) on this part of the Suffolk coast. Strongest gusts forecast for the rest of the day in the high 30s.

I know people often criticise the weather forecasters, but today's has been absolutely spot on, to the minute. 24 hours ago they forecasted the cold front hitting London dead-on at midday, at which precise hour the squall line duly signalled arrival along with its predicted 5-minute downpour, since when the strong to gale force wind that had been keeping going all night has dropped right out. I expect the temperature has plummeted too - I brought the thermometer in in case it was blown off the window sill.

A neighbour has invited me over for lunch - she's Chinese, and it will be proper Chinese food, not takeaway stuff. Should I be taking a "bottle" - knowing nothing about protocols or what would be a usual suggestion, I will be leaving this up to the other invitee, a German lady of longstanding acquaintance. Assuming coffee's on offer I'll just be taking some Hermesetas. No chopsticks!

I did - turned the sound down(not so much because of the fireworks but the other sound effects - supposedly a great soundtrack according to his lordship, but I wouldn't know - not my thing) and just watch the pretty patterns. The wind did a good job of clearing the smoke quickly which was an advantage.
Many years ago(I think it may have been 2012) I was watching the display and the cameras were spending quite a lot of time on the crowd when all of a sudden I spotted my son and his future wife. I hadn't known they were going so it was quite a surprise - and what were the chances among so many. Although at 6ft 4 he does tend to stand out from the crowd...

Somebody did try setting off mortar type fireworks last night, but that was all. Whether they will come out when the weather has calmed down I don't know.

Agree - the visual effects were spectacular, but the soundtrack was appalling! We heard fireworks here at MN, but couldn't see them.

Interesting story about your son and future daughter-in-law OOO.
