We have had rain - hurrah. And of a decent quantity and quality that has actually managed to reach the soil. Apologies to those who have seen too much of it, but here all the recent precipitation has just passed by on the other side, or disappeared before reaching us, as it has done for several weeks.
The site where I do volunteer gardening has a good sized pond in a wildlife garden and yesterday there was more than 12" of liner showing - not a good situation. Last night's offering won't have altered the level noticeably, but at least will have halted the loss. The management of the pond is a constant problem - excessive plant growth is a big part of why the water level is difficult to maintain,as the transpiration from the foliage of invasive and unsuitable plants is a major reason for the loss of water, but lacking bodies with sufficient physical capabilities to undertake the work to keep it properly under control, we are in a lose-lose situation.

Up here, in 'filthy', beautiful western edge of Cumbria fells, it is - as I post - 5C, it is clouds low / mist/ drizzle / wild NE wind.

Unprecedented rate of convection building cumulus to heavy showers from clear sky in an hour. Quick glance at the barometer followed by recoil in horror explains all. Warm undies laid out in readiness for tomorrow and the weekend.

Winter coat already being worn here. Rain once again this morning and not too warm at around 12°C.

                  I thought I was being somewhat undies-stated!

One downpour after another today - Must admit I had not expected this, maybe just the odd drizzly shower; I have to get out sometime this afternoon for some shopping.

                    At least it's not cold!

A damp start to the day but that was forecast, and it dried by late morning. Surprisingly, although the airflow was from the NE, not a good direction in this part of the world, it wasn't particularly chilly. Wednesday is my volunteer gardening day, so it was good to see things looking better for the rain we've had recently(eventually!) and the wildlife pond well on the way to getting back to the water level it should have.

It may be that you live within some sort of rain shadow locality. Generally speaking, the effects of climate change on weather patterns look likely from recent evidence to shift the burden of rainfall away from the SW uplands and S Wales in the direction of the SE. Parts of Devon and Cornwall have been reporting low reservoir levels for the past two years; Bedfordshire has just experienced its highest recorded rainfall for ANY MONTH. The usual highest rainfall areas will still continue to get their (un)fair share (pace DracoM!).

Lovely afternoon here to visit Helmsley Walled Garden, nearly drifted off on a bench in the sun...

Don't think that is something that East Anglia generally suffers from? A lot of the time it just seems that this bit of the country sticks out too far into the North Sea, so weather systems tend to have petered out or sail past to the west by the time they get anywhere remotely close.

A STEVE: an uncommon phenomenon, new to me, associated with Northern Lights displays:

UK sky-watchers on Monday night were treated to this unusual sight where skies were clear.

Warmer than of late here today, but now with copious amounts of heavy shower cloud across the London skyscape not surprisingly, given our proximity to a deep low pressure centre. A few thunderstorms are dotted around the country. Temperatures set to fall dramatically everywhere on Thursday, following the eastward passage of said low.

... we currently have a hurricane in London. According to the BBC -

"Don't be alarmed folks," says weather presenter Matt Taylor after a data glitch on the site.
