Some scary weather on the horizon as a deep low crosses Ireland on Wednesday then heads across Scotland, though how scary and far-reaching in scale is, erm, rather up in the air for the moment. Temperatures do appear to remain around or a little above late September average for the week, however, with high pressure bringing settled weather to most of the UK by next weekend.

And if you live overlooking Morecambe Bay,,,,,,can you imagine how we feel up here with that forecast?

Indeed, but remember when you were basking in warmth and sunshine while we down here were languishing under day after day of cold nor-easterlies waiting for summer to arrive. And we're not yet sure how far the strong winds predicted will extend - the south coast could be in for a battering!

Late summer warmth invited me to take my one cycle trip of the year into the Surrey/Kent countryside this afternoon. I had missed this in 2022 due to unsuitable weather, and was wondering if I still had the energy to make it. The main aim was to reach the White Bear at Ficklestone, 600 feet up in the N Downs separated by a couple of miles - and a spectacular valley view - from famous Biggin Hill. It has been the reward for the arduous climb to be taken to get to it. Guess what? The pub is completely boarded up for renovation - I should have checked beforehand!

The larger part of the return journey is downhill and can be done freewheeling, so within 20 minutes I was at West Wickham Rugby Club's outdoor cafeteria, enjoying a cuppa and large slice of chocolate brownie in warm sunshine and chatting to friendly elderly local ladies out on walkies with their definitely not American bully dogs. 23 miles all in. I was even able to make it up the final mile-long uphill stretch from Penge without needing to get off and walk - not bad for a 77 year old going on 78 - according to a neighbour!

Yesterday was very pleasant - sunny and warm. Today is a bit undecided as to both content and timing, but a mixture of overcast, precipitation, sunny bits, and generally warm sums it up I think. Certainly better than the forecast I saw at about 9pm last night, which was for wetness through much of the day.

                Sounds like you had fun.

Tipped it down early this morning here but by the time I went for my walk it was very pleasant, sunny and quite warm for this time of year - I sometimes think shorts would be more suitable for my walks in this weather, since my legs get quite sweaty, but for indoors I'd rather be wearing trousers...

No sign of a storm here yet. Not much wind and an above average temperature, cloudy.

Well, to judge by the amount of lumpy altostratus currently invading the skies there is a certain amount of elevated convection in progress, but evidently not strong enough to produce any lightning to judge by several checks on UKlightningmaps, let alone much in the way of rainfall, even. What is and has been *striking* is the persistence of temperatures more associated with midsummer than the end of September. In one way this is great! - it means a shorter period of needing to weigh oneself down with extra clothing and switch on the heating - but in another very disturbing, since it undermines the importance of seasonal regularity for life cycles which have taken millions of years to adapt.

Dawn yesterday was colourful, but also included a very strange effect. For about 10 minutes there was a narrow column of light,(think searchlight) starting from where the sun was, just above the horizon, reaching up to the remnants of the night sky clouds. It was quite faint, and mostly tinged pink, so showed up against the pale grey wispy clouds streaked across the orange-red clear sky. Very odd and I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before. Frustrating that it wasn't something I could photograph.

                        Known as a "sun pillar".

Filthy cold, high wind [NW], feels much more winter than autumn!

Thanks SA, knew I could rely on you for an answer! Mine wasn't as visually arresting as the photos that came up from a Google search, but no matter. I can see how the more showy ones would have quite an effect on people viewing them who didn't understand they were natural rather than supernatural phenomena.
The following day was quite a contrast with a colourless early start and very high cloud cover(I assume?) that made the sun look like a full moon - a silver disc in a grey sky which radiated very little light, adding to the moon effect.

Sunny and windy here. Ideal for the washing to dry. Enjoyed it with a nice bike ride earlier.

State of emergency declared in parts of New York City.
I wonder when the climate change deniers that seem to abound over there (more so than here, I think) will admit that they're wrong.

Eric Adams says anyone ‘caught off guard’ must have been living ‘under a rock’ after schools, homes, transport and roads were deluged
