The current problem is the quantity of surface water which is not only further breaking up the road surface but is also hiding the potholes which have developed, and which reduce already narrow roads even further as drivers stay towards in the middle of the road to avoid damage to their vehicles.
Increasing instances of serious potholes resembling small-scale quarries have been an issue around here for some time now, pre-dating the snow, and we hear more and more about it being a result of cuts in local authority maintenance, though I would add the increasing weight of heavy goods vehicles permitted on our roads, by virtue of what laws one has no idea. When I came back to live in London 14 years ago, in general roads used to be kept in pretty good condition. This level of care has now become very patchy (no pun intended) and, as a regular cyclist, I now avoid downhill runs at night - partly because street lights have become so dim it is hard to see road surfaces in front - subject for another thread coming on! - partly because the latest life-threatening pothole wasn't there a couple of days ago when one last went that way. I wonder if the anticipated hike in council tax will remedy this situation.

Another downfall of snow this morning here in the Pennines, coating the scenery - as the forecast yesterday suggested merely a light flurry first thing, this was something of a surprise. It's stopped now, and is due to have cleared up completely by this afternoon.

I heard on the TV, Ferney. Not very good. You should come down here sometime for a break!

Everything had cleared from the streets by noon, and from most of the hills by teatime _ the Beast from t'East doing a Columbo: "Oh, just one last thing!"

Lovely day this morning: mild & sunny.

(I lived in Eastbourne for ten years, so know that area very well indeed. That's over twenty years ago, and I've only been back once since for a funeral a couple of years ago: shocked and saddened at how the town centre had become so run down in the intervening years. But I do still miss the sea.)

Just a bit of a warning: ominous hefty, chilling wind is getting in up here in Western Pennines. Dry at the mo, but............... Maybe the weekend forecast is getting hereabouts a bit earlier than scheduled?

Pretty windy here today, quite disappointing after the pleasant spring-like conditions enjoyed yesterday. The sunshine's a drug, I tell ya!

Sunshine and warm here - maybe rain tomorrow.

Rain most of the day - at times very heavy - flooded roads on my journeys this evening.

Not surprising from the weather chart ! That frontal system sweeps NE across half of the country tonight and tomorrow, whereupon it grinds to a halt as the blocking high re-establishes itself centred over S Norway and Sweden, and then reverses westwards on Saturday as a weakened feature, to be followed by a return to those cold easterlies - though not as cold as last week, cold enough for the little precipitation expected in the E and S to be of the sleety/snowy type; but this is not expected to last very long, and should be over by Tuesday, with a slow backing round to seasonal westerlies and temperatures similar to today's.

Truly nasty NE / E wind, rain, and VERY cold. N.Pennine fells in cloud and swirls of unplesantness whipping down the dale.
As BBm suggests, they seem to have got the timing wrong on forecasts: it's here now, and it's got the bit between its teeth!!

On the coast in West Lancashire after much wind yesterday it's very benign here now.
