Were it not for backlogs of various sorts I would have undertaken a decent long cycle ride, today being the last likely opportunity for some time. Unfortunately what appears to be a queue of depressions and frontal systems is about to be inflicted on us - the reward for escaping similar record-breaking high temperatures to those of last year. Very confused opinions about "the poor summer" were being expressed on a phone-in this morning - some people saying if such is to be the case in future "we" will become even more of a "magnet" to people fleeing drought, flooding and war, others that the disincentive to visit previously favoured spots such as Greece and Spain will give a boost to UK tourism!

...oh, sorry - should've gone to Specsavers!
Been pelting down since lunchtime here today - if this continues through tomorrow morning, we'll probably get an inch of rain at least.

Fair amount of rain last night judging by the various containers standing around outside, and some very sharp, and very local, showers during the morning, dying away after lunch. Feeling rather sticky as the temperature has risen considerably. The sun isn't getting through but the cloud has thinned and broken up so it's very much brighter, and the breeze is clearing up the surface wet.
The farmers are having a rough time of it - the sudden outbreaks of heavy rain coupled with very strong winds are messing up harvest arrangements that would usually be in full swing round here.

Yes it is certainly very humid today - up in the 80s percentage-wise according to nearest station readings, and feeling like a shower cubicle just used. The persistent all-over cover of clag (low stratus. stratus fractus) makes for difficulties in ascertaining that key forecasting cloud indicator, namely what is going on higher up, so one is dependent on looking to the distant horizon uplands disappearing under approaching precipitation before venturing any distance out. Tomorrow should be brighter and feeling fresher, all in preparation for an anticipated wet weekend!
Edit: It looks as if everywhere is due for a lot of rain in the next few days, with temperatures closer to those to be expected in mid-September.Last edited by Serial_Apologist; 28-07-23, 22:33.

Rain stopped play just after 2pm ... Little bit frustrating as I only needed about another 10 mins to finish the garden task I was engaged in, and also the forecast was for the rain coming later. I've just checked the weather page again and there is no rain forecast until about 4 and nothing showing on the map anywhere nearby. Perhaps we've caught the fringe of something that's going over 15-20 miles south. Although it's clearing now I got wet enough to need to change clothes so I'll not resume today - tomorrow morning should be OK according to the current view.
This morning was pleasant - intermittent sun and a pleasant breeze making for comfortable temperatures, so the round of errands in town was a leisurely amble rather than a scurry to get things done before wet/cold/wind got too much.A much pleasanter feel than yesterday, which was very sticky and energy sapping.

Rain and drizzle most of this morning, clearing at midday to broken skies and spotty showers; from a distance clouds seem to be building to a cap at around 12,000 feet, which should prevent enough convection for heavy showers, let alone thunderstorms here, notwithstanding some very dark cloud bases from time to time.
Thousands of youngsters, black and female in the majority, pouring into Crystal Palace Park for a festival of House music as I walked my way home to the sensation underfoot of bass reverberations, an hour ago. .

It's raining now, but fortunately this morning was dry - cloudy and stuffy too.
One odd thing I've noticed recently is seeing people out on walks in their coats, jackets and trousers, even though it is stuffy and July. It may not be sunny, but it makes me wonder what said people wear in the winter!
