Some very cool flashes of lightening here and rumbles and crackles of thunder, as well as rain.

Another hot day in store although slightly less so than yesterday with any luck. Reaching 29 or 30 came as a shock after long periods of thinking 15 "warm"! No prospect of rain, although places further inland may see some, and the direction of airflow will continue to exacerbate the dryness.

Yesterday's storm system skirted to our west, with no more than a few raindrops here. Today convective activity has sparked off with extraordinary rapidity. At 11 am my cloud observations indicated another 3 hours needed for things to get underway; with an hour thunder was to be heard within a few miles. Right now the Hampstead area seems to be in the middle of a very intense storm which produced a brief shower here half an hour ago, with lightning occurring every ten seconds. Temperature and humidity levels are at similar values to yesterday's followjng a steamy night when it fell no lower than 17C.

Thunderstorm now overhead here - 20 minutes' worth of heavy, though not I would say torrential rain: the first proper precipitation here since May 12. The most impressive part is frequent lightning, all of it (so far) intra-cloud, followed by soft roll upon roll of thunder: none - as yet - of the sudden shocks associated with cloud-to-ground strikes. The whole system is moving ESE to WNW, and the front edge has just reached the M25 west of Heathrow, so in effect it is becoming wider in area, quite probably with some back-building, judging by the number of spherics still occurring right here on its back edge. A quick glance outside the front door shows a large-spreading back anvil extending to about 25 degrees above the eastern horizon. Temperature drop from a pre-storm breezy 29C to a calm 19C right now.
This is turning out to be a real gem of a storm!
Just undertaken a circular walkabout in order to to witness the storm retreating west from the top of Sydenham Hill and breath in nature's wonderful aftermath: still an occasional rumble emanating from a secondary cell down towards Banstead. Reports have been coming in of road flooding near Golder's Green.
