Sky 8/8 lumpy stratocumulus cloudy - but at least with a light westerly and temperature in the 11-12 C range it doesn't feel too bad today. And the latter are predicted to be 5-7 degrees above mid-February average for the next fortnight: surely it can't be long before we hear the first blackbird song.

Another brilliantly sunny day, with none of the fog or even mist reported elsewhere in the region, and the temperature rose from last night's minimum of 2C (1C below normal) to a mild and windless 11C this afternoon.
Earlier I narrowly avoided hitting a small child while cycling downhill on a neighbouring street. Areas in shadow make it very hard to distinguish details - indeed there is discussion about this on my usual weather site; as I proceeded out of the blinding sunlight I spotted a woman crossing from the right who stopped to let me through, not myself having noticed the small child of maybe two years of age standing facing her on the left hand kerb. Had she stepped onto the road, as little children are apt to do, I would have had no time to brake or swerve to avoid her, and the next 15 minutes left me obsessing over what I would have done in such circumstances. Would I have been to blame? It seemed an inauspicious run up to a dental appointment at 3.30, for what turned out to be a massive filling, but luckily I had calmed down by that point, and the operation went without problems, as it always does these days. The newish spot-welding procedure applied while administering the infill means one can now chew to one''s heart's content, and not have to wait 24 hours, as of old.
High cirrus cloud in gradually spreading in from the west as I write, dimming out the setting sun ahead of the passage of the cold front tomorrow, announcing windier and less settled weather for the north, although down here it is expected to settle down again, while remaining on the mild side.

It was very misty here before and during my walk (10-11). Then the sun came out a bit later.

Seems to have been quite a sharp frost overnight, although not noted at the recording station, with cars covered, soil in plant tubs hard and the birdbath needing to have an ice floe knocked out before refilling. The sun is battling through the murk which should help. Not what was wanted for the weekly volunteer gardening session though as shady areas may be slow to thaw before late morning.
