Look. we LIVE in the western Pennines and I can assure you that when a late November NE / SE wind with persistent rain is bottled and funnelled through gullies and whirled around in dips and bowls. it is penetratingly COLD. East shoulders any hint of South out of it, and when it's a GENUINE NE, then it's serious.

Down here, it’s a high of 11C, with some showers, around lunchtime. Tame by comparison!Don’t cry for me

Set to be sunny and not too cold (even better out of the wind) all day so I am mightily frustrated that this wretched recurring bug prevents me from doing a trip to the seaside on a day when strikes aren't affecting the train service. Oh well, at least the fine weather will make necessary shopping duties more pleasant.

I think our forefathers would think we'd all gone soft here with these constant complaints about temperatures of 6C and rain - in November! We've all clearly forgotten what it's like to have to daily scrape the ice off our windscreens and see your breath spiral into the hoar frost speckled sky. Could this be the first month in the year with below average temperatures? Somehow I doubt it!

Frost on the inside of the windows, flagstones underfoot, one room (of two) heated by a small coal fire everywhere else unheated and drafty with the only bedroom home to an ageing Valor paraffin stove that cast kaleidoscopic patterns on to the ceiling when lit. A long unlit corridor linking the front room to the scullery. No electricity only gas for cooking and lighting. That was how it was for millions in the forties and fifties, so I agree that our forefathers would think we'd gone soft.

Would have been an ideal day for a ride today, except my derailleur is b*ggered. Yesterday for inexplicable reasons it suddenly got caught in the back wheel, bucking me like a bronco horse onto the road. Luckily there was no traffic following and I am OK apart from a bit shaken up and today a nice bruise on my butt! The attachment had got badly bent, and I've just spent an hour trying to bend it back into shape, without success. This means walking the bike up to the cycle shop first thing tomorrow and leaving it there while I shop for my groceries - possibly longer if he has a lot of jobs going. It will probably need a new derailleur!
