MrsBBM, advised me not to go out, yesterday, as although, a lovely day, she said it was very cold. A shame that. Now it’s a return to showers.

Managed to avoid the rain on my morning walk until five minutes at the end. I consider that a success having seen the forecast beforehand. At 11, not too cold here.

The wetness arrived earlier than had been forecast but was insignificant and shortlived so didn't necessitate change of plans. This afternoon when it was supposed to become actually wet, again it was halfhearted to say the least. Rather breezy which made it feel chilly. Shouldn't be too many problems for those fire-working tonight and all the recent rain should help control any mistakes or mischief.
This, from the Met Office summary,
Outbreaks of manly light rain this evening
(my bold) seemed apt considering the fire and whizzbangs tend to be a male preserve...

I wish it would actually bucket down, and drown those wretches and their bangers, terrifying cats, dogs and wildlife in general. I hate people celebrating the eve of my birthday this way every year!

Cloud / smoke so low that rockets from local fireworks display virtually disappeared before breaking out!

I know, right? I mean, what's there to celebrate?

I need some time to think about that!

It's been a typical dank and murky November day. Not that cold though. As a child I can remember some very cold Bonfire Nights including, I think, 1968 which was bitterly cold.

It's been much quieter than usual for these parts this year. None of the usual depth charge type explosions.

There's a large public display held a very short distance from my home but it lasted no longer than half an hour tonight, quite a bit less than earlier years, so caused very little disruption to my music schedule. In years past it's sounded like a war zone. The private fireworks events seem to have gradually faded away perhaps because people can no longer afford them.

When is this rain going to stop?!?!?

With any luck it already has with you too, BBM - just a temporary break before a post-frontal trough out to the west comes through this afternoon or evening, bringing some heavy, maybe thundery showers. An hour ago I optimistically put laundry out on the line, suspended across deep puddles where fallen leave are blocking a soak away sump, with the large hornbeam above still dripping. All being well, fingers crossed, it should be adequately dry to bring indoors for ironing purposes later this afternoon: out to the west there is a clear straight line at about 20 degrees above the horizon, indicating the extreme back edge of the cloud shield from this morning's heavy rain - technically thick altostratus but probably a spread along a large anvil cloud extension; below that a narrow strip of blue sky; and beyond that grey stratocumulus down to the horizon - probably that post-frontal in there hiding in waiting. Temperature a muggy 13C - wind has dropped out almost completely.

According to the weather map we should be having a few hours let-up now but there's no sign of it, a view that the detailed forecast backs up - a brief lessening perhaps and possibly a glimpse of sun before settling down to serious rain again.
It has provided an opportunity to look in the loft now that the roof work is complete to see if there are any wet bits; all looking good so far, fingers crossed that continues.
