Should be fine today, BBM, and mild - as usual!

We're back in a stuck situation once more. I didn't think "normality" would last long - and what is "normality" these days, in any case?

A lovely warm (peaking at 18) sunny afternoon today. Recent cold nights have prompted the change of leaf colour in earnest so cheering sights of trees decked in red, yellow, and orange leaves, against a blue sky.
Just remembered that a relative in far scottish parts emailed to say there was snow on the tops this weekend...

This evening's sunset was extraordinary: a psychedelic display of bubblewrap altocumulus cloud in discontinuous lines from one horizon to the other, set against a turquoise sky. Temperatures reached 20C in central London today (17C here) and are predicted to remain high for the rest of the week, but with heavy rain bands crossing the country - thunderstorms are presently waiting out in the wings to the SW!

            Indeed, re normality!

            Yes, a fine day today.

Well I hope they carry on waiting for a couple of days at least. It's the final push for the roof work on my house and my neighbour's; the membrane and battens are all down, waiting for the tiles to go back on and the fiddly bits - ridge tiles and flashings to be done. Heavy rain would delay that and I really want it finished so that I can get into the loft to start clearing up. Although everything up there is covered or wrapped what I hadn't realised would happen is for clouds of fine soot to rain down and coat everything, and trying to clean it off is going to be a lengthy and mucky job - just cleaning the treads of the loft ladder so I could stick my head up far enough to take a look took a while. A reminder of the days when these houses were built and everyone had coal fires... At least a couple of the houses still use their open fires with coal, very evident to nose and eyes.

Same here - not one cloud in the sky and not much wind at all.

We've been very lucky most of this October - most the rain has fallen in the evening and night, and many days have been sunny and mild. It can't carry on, but I hope November isn't too bad!

Oddoneout, I will have to hope on your behalf then. The showery outbursts are expected to be discontinuous, so, with any luck, you could avoid them, or at any rate the worst.. The lunchtime forecast predicted them as tracking north to the west of London for the next two days, so that should, er, cover it? Good luck with your new roofover, anyway.

Sky completely clearr of cloud here so far today, as in Redditch. Not quite as warm as yesterday - the sun having to do battle to warm the soil following a coldish night. Shadows seem suddenly to lengthen considerably at this time of the year.

Major drop in temp, and the sharpening of an easterly that has motive and insistence.

Dublin's just had a right humdinger of a thunderstorm. We could well be in line for this, tonight and tomorrow.

Should work out OK. Builders have got the ridge tiles on and all bar 16 of the roof tiles on. They have had to hunt around for the tiles (reclaim yards etc), but have distributed the gaps at the front of the roof so that even if it rains tomorrow morning(which it is set to do but not seriously until mid-morning according to the forecast at the moment) it shouldn't take long to slip them in as it can be done from the scaffold platform rather than having to go up the roof. At least it shouldn't be windy.
Sunshine has been more fitful today and it has been cooler with a brisk easterly breeze, but still a pleasant autumn day, and fine for the volunteer gardening.

                            That sounds reassuring.

Fierce north easterly winds suddenly sprung up here and nastily cold too.

Temperatures remaining in the more usual late summer range next week should keep me in cold meals for another week, saving on heating bills, all being well
