Just taken down bean poles after worst harvest ever due to cold Spring then drought. Warm work in pleasant sunshine at 16C.

Actually quite warm today, against my expectations, but lack of air movement has left most of the laundry on the line wet, apart from bed sheets and pillow cases. There are other places to drape damp clothing - I might try this out this winter to save on costs in powering the spin dryer, which in any case is on its last turns! Back in the days of impoverishment I can recall bringing frozen items off the line in winter, and having to "engineer" them through the doorway!!

Wednesday indicates a strong trough moving through from the west producing very strong winds across the country, especially for Wales, the Midlands and South; and similarly for Friday on a broad westerly airstream. Temperatures remaining around the expected for early October. Mind how you go!

Just what I want when the roof is due to be undergoing a major refurb... I don't suppose the builders will be too pleased either.

I'm trying to make up mymind whether or not to make today my one "rural" cycle trip of the year thus far. It takes about an hour to reach the inner boundary of the Green Belt - which may seem slow but for the fact that it's uphill all the way!

Edible garden gnomes, BBM?

I did do one of the "country rides" - not the longest, at around 26 miles, but the destination Addington village and back via West Wickham loop including a mile and a half long walk on the edge of the open countryside, partly through woodland, and including a stop off at an open air cafeteria for a cuppa and choccy brownie! A very pleasant 14-mile journey, apart from suffering one of my irregular visual distortion attacks just as I was nearing home. Unfortunately the neighbour's cat decided she wanted to pay me a visit at that point, and in my semi-dark entrance I could hardly see her through the miasma of sub-psychedelic swirlings and massed twinklings in patches occupying half the visual field associated with the attack. To anyone who may be concerned may I just say that I am advised these are in all probability migraines occurring inside the eyes, which are quite common, particularly in "older folk", and not normally thought to indicate any underlying condition of a serious nature. Too much staring at computer screens can be a trigger! Episodes usually last between 10 and 20 minutes, in my case occurring about once a month, and I have never experienced more than one in a day. A nuisance more than anything.

........and now, despite nice forecasts from BBC suggesting that nastiness will drift south and east, it is COLD eg 8C, wind rising, and rain even richer. Erm......??

Thanks Joseph K - mild weather means I might be able to have one more longish trip later this week, though not the 26 mile route which as BBM says is a lot to expect: at my age one loses muscle strength very quickly without continual strenuous exercise; I would really have to work up for that distance!

Not much sun expected here today as cloud encroaches ahead of the weather fronts to the NW which are expected to clear all areas by tomorrow night, followed by slightly cooler westerlies, but still carrying above early October averages.

Very mild. As I retire to bed at 11.30, outdoor temp is 16C. Living room pleasant enough at 22C with no heating needed so far this autumn.
