    .

... another solution to walking in icy conditions :

Walking on icy streets need not be a downhill experience if you put your socks over your shoes

That sounds a good idea if you don't mind wearing out socks rather quickly! I knew there was something one could rub into leather to soften it, just couldn't remember what. I'll try the try the olive oil idea and let people know. Thanks for these suggestions, vints.

... perhaps dubbin might be a more practical idea than all that olive oil -

        for example :

Tho' (sudden Proustian memory... ) my father always used neatsfoot oil -

        for example :

And of course there is also saddle-soap...

Ah yes - Dubbin! Most people around today probably associate the word with layering successive recordings on top of one-another!

Going to be another cold day today. Thanks SA for that. Air too dry? Interesting.

Brilliant sun, very dry, powerful, incisive easterly, knife to the bone.

I've been following this practice for many years and it's not failed me yet. The only slight downside is that of the feet going cold very quickly.

I do hope that Forumistas will be safe during the coming Polar Vortex this week. Don't do unnecessary journeys etc. I've been telling my elderly mother this everyday. She's nearly 92 and still drives! Which I do worry about!

Apart from that, lovely sunny day here today. Going to an indian in a nearby village called Lindfield, wioth a couple of friends, where they do a lovely buffet!

Very sunny yesterday and today; not a cloud in the sky. Cold breeze, but it's all about the sun.

Indeed it is. Cool but very sunny day here with perfect blue sky .

and we had three of these circling around earlier, just above the house.

Unfortunately my camera battery had run out so had to use phone, which wasn't easy, especially with low sun.

Can anybody identify from this blurry image?

They were big. Wingspan at least 4ft, I would say. I think they might have been Red Kites , which we have round here. There is quite a clear white marking on the underside of the wing. I have to move my laptop screen to see it.

Is three together usual? There was a report in the local paper of three together at Old Sarum a couple of years ago.
