Sounds good. Parts of the UK may turn out to be hotter than Athens and Istanbul, which we visited recently, though I think we did have very high temperatures for a couple of days in those parts. We did live in the US in parts which got hotter, though a very dry heat, and the UK seemed very cold afterwards. Humidity makes things feel a lot worse.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

No, here at home. Due to peak at 4pm at 36º, until 6pm.We do have a slight breeze so it's not unbearable, but I forewent my amble on the Common.

There's a letter in today's Times from a resident of a village in Kent, where the church has been offered as a place of refuge during the heat: apparently it has wifi and a modern loo despite being 700 years old.

Backdoor thermometer between 38 and 40 (it has 2 arms for max/min), but what caught my eye first was that it had hit 100F which seems to give a better "feel" of very hot. I know that it isn't very accurate now (never seemed to recover from a previous episode when hung in the sun and got rather too close to its 50 limit)so I put out the little fridge/freezer thermometer which goes up to 40 and it reckons 35. The breeze is picking up which actually makes things feel even worse as it is a hot one. The house varies in temp, partly as it faces E-W, but so far downstairs living is 24, helped by being a mid terrace, and judicious use of curtains, blinds and voile panels.
Family in NW Highlands enjoying a toasty 20 degrees apparently.
Meanwhile the forecast for here for tomorrow has gone up yet again, to 37.

Same here, although I went for my hour-long walk 9:30-10:30.

Also I went out again at about 13:10 to go pick up a book I'd ordered from the Post Office. Spoiler alert: it was hot! But not humid. I am in my room now with the windows closed and I don't feel uncomfortable.

it's reached 37 degrees here but doesn't actually feel uncomfortable, at least in the shade. Sitting outside reading in the shade and it feels very pleasant indeed.

I think we've established you are likely to be an outlier in this regard...

... most of us are cowering indoors, myself included - 35C outdoors, 26C indoors (still too hot!).

From having just now stuck my face out one of my N-facing windows for a sec, and retracted it just as quick - 33.5C - I seem so far to be having some success with my strategy of following the good Bryn's advice, adding to which keeping a jug of water in the fridgel given that tap water is now lukewarm (and London tap water tastes a bit soapy in any case!), and not using heat generating domestic appliances if possible such as the cooker, toaster, microwave and gas boiler - the immersion heater for half-hour stints uses far less energy too. The electric kettle cannot really be avoided, but it warms up in a couple of minutes and contents added to washing up water. Anything requiring cooking in any way is out as far as I am concerned until this is over - which means no boiled egg with my breakfast tomorrow. It's at times like this one discovers even the flat screen TV gets quite warm. For some reason the kitchen has nevertheless become warmer than the rest of the flat - I would think the fridge must bear responsibility for that and thus keep the interconnecting door to the rest of the flat closed. I have a couple of soaked mini towels in the deep freeze now, ready to give Strategy 2 a go if the present one fails. A phoner in on this morning's Jeremy Vine warned in stentorian tones of the dangers of imbibing excessive amounts of water, as has been heavily propounded, as this can wash too many essential salts out of the body... but one is left wondering what is the recommended intake and frequency thereof? I've been finding that whenever I start feeling a bit dizzy in this weather - and tbh I'm not sure to what extent this might just be psychomatic - half a pint of cold water manages to make me feel OK. There doesn't appear to be anything "on" this topic yet.

Might have to stick some Mahler on now.

That could mean the death of Venice, mind!

22 Degs celsius in my flat right now - just 1 degree up on yesterday despite the much grater temperature hike outside. I'd like to recommend my above-described strategy I've been adopting for anyone interested.
