Now back to the book.
I am surprised how quickly the temperature has now dropped down to just 21C from the 30C mid afternoon max. Now it is a tiny bit cooler out there than in here - I've flung open every window, and consequentially every opportunist moth and mosquito in the vicinity is availing itself of the hospitality! I've got the faulty fan heater I found thrown away blowing cold air next to a window. There's no air movement discernible, and so the last thing before bedding down will be to swing all the doors to try to bring some of that cooler outside air into the place: hopefully the temperature will go on falling as the night passes. I shall be out shopping for a few groceries before breakfast, the probably stay indoors until evening. A weakening cold front is predicted to slide south east and then south across the country tomorrow and Wednesday, by which time those north of a line roughly from Bristol to Lincoln will be in more comfortable air, and at least here it won't be quite as hot as today and tomorrow.

About 20 here too. Last night and tonight (two hottest nights of the year so far) some antisocial b*stard has lit a bonfire around 10.30pm ...

...I feel a nuisance report to the district council coming on!

It’s going to be uncomfortable later this week, that’s for sure. I wonder if the neighbours’ fixation with bbqs will wear off. Urban London has become a lot busier in general this past decade or so. Historically, people would start families and move out a bit to get a decent sized garden. Now they extend small houses from 6 small rooms to 9 small rooms and are generally more anti-social. All of which is exacerbated in this heat. And that’s before you add in local councils raking in revenue from extremely anti social “festivals” in local parks which are public order tinderboxes. 40000 in Finsbury Park on multiple weekends this summer, ruining residents amenity. Again, the weather, blissful if you’re a teen living it up, just makes it worse for locals.

Part weather, part grumble, apologies. I love the light from this weather, and people should be able to enjoy the warmth, but over concentrated pockets of populace do nobody any favours ;)

Bit of rain here just now. Cloudier and cooler here today, but then, I won't be here later - London beckons!

Is that the kind of conflagration that's now called a firepit and is the latest must have garden accessory? And the emissions from which all right minded law abiding citzens with regulation compliant woodburners will duly be blamed for...
If a genuine bonfire you might have more luck with the fire brigade as local authority resources aren't sufficient to enforce regulations around such nuisances these days?

I can't wait to get the forthcoming ultra-high temperatures out of the way, which is such a shame and waste of summer, the looking forward to which is one of the few things that make winter worth putting up with.

I'm thinking of various activities to help pass psychological time more quickly. I have found washing dishes and cutlery always takes up more time than one usually wants to do; also meal preparations involving cutting up vegetables and peeling spuds. In addition I have a number of youtube links to some of the more relaxing, arguably time-wasting youtubes of various ostensibly knowledgeable people armed with selfie cams leading us around London and other interesting locations. Sorting through earlier transcripts for my projected book on jazz, editing and so on, also uses up time to the point where one ends up wondering where the day went.

Still 24C out there at 11.30, hardly a leaf moving - very stuffy feeling. I went out as it was getting dark and applied the hosepipe to the wilting borders and potted plants, some of which have been completely flattened, which I have not observed before. Can't see myself getting much shut eye tonight - I hope we have the relief of some cooler nights before the heat returns on Sunday.

Here in Camden it is stuffy, at least now I'm in the restaurant section of the hostel I'm in. I got about five hours sleep, the bedroom somehow was kept relatively cool, cooler in fact than my bedroom at home.

Far too warm for most of the night, then the temp dropped at about 5am and it is still pleasantly fresh and cool (comparatively speaking, at 19 or 20). Good news for the gardening duties today, and Thursday and Friday looking good too,but the forecast for the beginning of next week gets ever more dire..
Rather tiresome to find that I hadn't turned the outside tap fully off (it has a short length of hose attached to make filling cans easy which sits in a bucket to catch drips so it's not immediately obvious the tap needs another turn) and it had been oozing all night. Much has gone under my large collection of potted plants, and the small frog that lives under the woodstore and in the shady border alongside will be happy, but I feel guilty at the waste of water and money.

                            Cooler at night too.

The cloud cover until now, combined with a gentle cool breeze, has made for pleasant conditions, welcome for the Wednesday gardening duties. Occasional breaks allowing the sun through were a reminder just how hot it would otherwise be. The cloud is now breaking and the temp is rising but due to cool off during the night, which will be good. It was very warm last night and I didn't get much sleep so could do with not repeating that tonight.
