Hoping for the wind to drop and the sun to come out a bit more over the next few days, as we're looking forward to a short visit from a fellow forumite and his wife.
Fountains Abbey and RHS Harlow Carr possible venues to visit, with lots of good musical, food/drink, and politics chat as well, I imagine.

Sunday afternoons also feature a band/ensemble of some sort.

Sadly, they have to leave earlier than that on Sunday to get home for work on Monday; otherwise it would have been good to hear the band.
Due to arrive tomorrow evening though, so we can have two full days of expeditions/tourism.

I visited Fountains Abbey a few years ago and they asked if I had been before - my reply was ‘Yes in 1956’. I said it hadn’t changed much apart from the entrance and welcome area which had expanded. A beautiful, restful place, made better by the fact it was one of those sunny, blue sky October days.

Overcast all day which was possibly just as well as it felt quite muggy and got up to 21 so if the sun had got through it could have been rather too warm for my gardening duties. Tomorrow's potential high will be knocked back by a brisk N or NNW breezes. No relief on the rain deficit front in sight.

Heavily overcast here, too, and windy with it. Warmish but nothing special, around 18 degrees. Bit puzzled as to why the massive black clouds have yielded no rain. At times, and for several days now, it's looked like a terrific storm is brewing up but nothing happens.

I've noticed that too. I've also noticed the faintest random sprinkle from the sky while on a walk, amounting to nothing.

I am not looking forward to the next few nights. I have already laid out a pseudo-futon at the lowest point in the house to access the lowest temperature but doubt it will be enough to permit decent nights' sleeping.

I've told our imminent visitors (from down south) to bring sweaters with them (though they can borrow spares) as they might feel cold up here.


Actually looks like we'll have a decent few days. Still a rare event to be warm and windless enough to sit out in the garden in the evening, though.

The curdled grey cloud cover which in more normal times would have almost certainly produced at least some rain has squeezed out a few minutes of light drizzle and that appears to be it. The brisk (mid 20s gusts) northerly airflow and lack of sun make it distinctly cool outside. It should get warmer if the sun manages to appear, but I can't see it getting anywhere near the high of 24 that's forecast - but of course that's the generic east of england rather than east anglia prediction.

The forecast of a heatwave in the 30s next week fills me with dread, not least as all the gardening work I have done this week will need watering at least twice, which means not just having to be outside but having to get in the car to get there as well. Also high temps, especially when they come suddenly, often make me unwell (gippy gut) which adds to the discomfort. Fortunately I'm not rostered to work next week (just have to hope I don't get a distress call!) so have some control over when I go out.

I know the feeling - not only the nauseous dizzy feeling but general energy depletion - which is only to be expected, I would think, in one's mid-70s. Agewise, that is!

This afternoon the stratocumulus layer has broken up and almost dispersed entirely, making for a very pleasant afternoon for my ride over to Clapham, where I undertook the fifth and final walk of the series, going from Clapham South tube, where the S Circular meets the A24 (and where 10 years ago I pranged my last-ever motor, trying to cross three lanes of traffic I thought were only two!) walking the bike north-east along that same A24 (Clapham Common South Side) to that nightmare of a junction at the northeast end by Clapham Common tube - about a mile in all. There are no buildings long that particular stretch older than 1770, unlike on the north side where a row of cottages is said to date back to Queen Anne's era, but plenty of interest, from the strange pillar box building at the start of the walk, which is a deep sheter built in 1942, used not only to accommodate those sheltering or made homeless by bombing raids but one of the first groups of migrants on the Windrush, to Crescent Grove at the top end, an elegant secluded Regency double crescent* consisting of a terrace on one side and semi-detached houses with hipped roofs on the other, divided down the centre by an oval of gardens - the first multiple house development in Clapham. Although only five miles from Parliament this is one of several locations still retaining features of its rural past in south London.
