Temperature had already reached 27.5 at midday here, which is pretty good given that it is almost as high as in central London - here we are usually 2-3 degrees cooler. 31 maximum is expected -fortunately there is a good breeze blowing today, which should at least create the impression if not actuality of a cooling effect. I'm staying indoors until evening, when I shall take my walk.
What does boil them effectively is not running the solar heated water out of the hosepipe before directing it at the plants... Or using water from a watering can that's been sitting out for a while. I learned that the hard way a few years ago when I lost a batch of seedlings, and was reminded of it yesterday when a link in my hosepipe chain (3 needed to reach the veg) came apart while I was moving it and I got soaked by very hot water.
I agree about rainwater being more effective, but I can't risk waiting for nature to do the honours, not least as the forecast of precipitation has already reduced. There is no danger of the garden getting too much water!

This is ridiculous. Not only did the wind become very strong after midday - gusting to 30 mph - but it is also scorching hot, so it's just impossible outside. My shade thermometer peaked at 34 degrees, but apparently at this time tomorrow the forecast reckons it could be just 14 degrees as the wind goes round to NE...
I wonder how many deaths will be caused by this heat, and how many PV arrays and wind turbines have been switched off as the grid can't use the power.

Double summer time would help, though not everybody likes the idea.

I’m having a bad time, with this hot weather. I have enough trouble coping in this weather, with also coping with prostate cancer, which plays havoc with your body thermostat. Also with Multiple Myeloma Cancer as well. Plus, asthma and hay fever too.

Sorry to hear this, BBM. My hay fever has been a bit irritating (though the temperature means my eczema has disappeared).

A much cooler, and wet day here. Rain won't stop me going for a walk now, though...

Depends where you live. it can be pretty cold in places which have light until midnight - been there - done that. It is possible to enjoy at drink standing outside at -10C - or lower - if the sun is shining and a completely blue sky, and there's snow on the ground. Also the north of Scotland is quite cold this year - really miserable. However I have also lived in places with high temperatures - though admittedly a dry heat. 35C in a dry climate is bearable - though gets tough above 40C, whereas 25+C with high humidity is very unpleasant.

Glad it’s cooler where you are!

                Good luck, with the walk!

Thanks... the rain wasn't incredibly heavy, though I didn't walk as far as I normally would.

I once experienced minus 10 C in Zurich on a calm night. It was very odd - the dryness of the air meant there was no feeling of temperature, ie warmth or cold, of any kind. Outside the hotel where I was working, people were standing around in groups with drinks in hand, conversing, many with jackets off. However, this morning's 25 C combined with high humidity was exactly as you say, and definitely more unbearable than yesterday's 31 C with a dry moderate south-westerly. Having registered today's minimum of 18 C in my weather diary, I will have to get the Tippex out, as the temperature has fallen an amazing 9 degrees C since 12 noon here, marking the passage of a cold front that may be weak, judging by the amounts of rainfall (so far!), but is the demarcation line between the intense heat over N France and much cooler air coming down from the vicinity of Iceland. This morning was interesting, observing bands of high-based convective cloud, at around 9,000 ft I estimated, trundling very slowly from WSW to ENE along the line of the front, and cumulus fractus, which has now spread into a continuous stratocumulus layer as a consequence of rain supersaturation, approaching down from the NE! Bizarre if you've not seen this kind of thing before in the vicinity of thundery weather.

Huge temperature drop from 33 degrees yesterday to 12 degrees exactly 24 hours later However, the heat still lingers indoors - it's still 25 degrees in my listening room and a nasty shock awaits when venturing outdoors.

It's funny how that should be the case since for a long time it was a case of warmer outside than in...

Big drop here from the 25C of this morning to 12C now. Plenty of elevated lightning and thunder in London for the past half hour, but surprisingly little in the way of rain, so somewhere else must be getting an unfair share!

At least we got the thunderstorm forecast right!
