Stormy Weather II

First of the heavy showers as predicted right now as a convoy of cumulonimbus weigh in from the west: and now the first distant thunder, from out Staines way. I just managed to get my dead heading of the roses done in time! 15C will be today's top temperature here, I would think.

Quite an intense storm now crossing Wandsworth and Clapham - big cloud-to-ground flashes one per minute with smaller ones between, followed by earth-shaking booms. The main core looks destined for Brixton. We're getting the tail-end of this as I write - flash half a mile to the north just now. Fast-moving situation. Torrential rain - now large pea-sized hail. The two guys on our scaffolding have decided to wind up operations. Just as well I cut my walk short!

Edit Storm already past and out to the east. Interesting that it followed a WNW->ESE trajectory, bringing the centre right across us here, rather than the W->E route I had expected, especially with a WSW-erly at ground level: so-called "right turning" storms are often severer than those just riding on the surface winds. There are no signs of further storms out to the west - but that was also true an hour ago. My guess is that convection in this kind of weather gets an extra boost as it crosses the outer suburbs, where surface temperatures would be higher than those of the approaching countryside.

The question now is, will the storm now breaking out near Guildford follow a similar trajectory, and head towards BBM Land, or will it come up this way?

Bad luck there, JK. However, the weather does seem to be picking up up here in the coming days even though nothing to get excited about. I don't get eczema but really loathe the persistently cold weather we've been having (still got my winter jumper on) and often feel envious of MickyD and HighlandDougie in their French homes. Too old to escape the chilly atmosphere of Johnson's England now and its dire weather, but France, Italy or Austria would have suited me fine as more congenial boltholes had I been twenty years younger and hundreds of times richer.

Seeing where you're located, Petrushka, when you mentioned Johnson's England the first thing that sprang to mind was Dr Johnson - a much more genial thought than the current PM.

Here's hoping the weather improves soon. The app on my phone doesn't appear to suggest it improves much over the next few days but I have learned to take it with a large pinch of salt.

Aargh, I can't keep up! When I first checked today's forecast, about 30 mins ago, all the rain that was supposed to happen according to last night's forecast, had gorn. Just looking again and all of a sudden it's back but at different times which will potentially write off this morning's volunteer garden stint. Oh well just take a selection of clothing and hope for the best - the weather map is patchy to say the least in terms of potential rain clouds. Temperature still not that good.

Scattered showers forecast yet again here and as I've been unable to use the Weedol for several weeks due to continuous wind and rain, the weeding is becoming desperate and out of control. Also not warm again and hard to believe that we are in June. Have barely dispensed with the winter jumper yet!

Oh well just take a selection of clothing and hope for the best - the weather map is patchy to say the least in terms of potential rain clouds. Temperature still not that good.

The best place to look in these particular conditions is out to your west, as that is where any showers will be coming from. You should get enough time as the air flow today is slow, but once one of them arrives it may take some time to clear! Here we've just had our first shower of the day - a light one - but I can see to the north from the fraying upper edges of the larger cumulus that the cap is now broken; and the very dark undersides to the north-west indicate considerable cloud depths.

A strange sort of day weatherwise today, with rain hanging around this morning, and the afternoon's sunshine spoilt by a blustery north-easter that made the briefly reached 20C feel cooler than it otherwise would have. Watching the radar maps showing lively thunderstorms which have been ongoing for most of the day across N France slowly edging across the Channel, which could make for a sleepless night unless they do what they sometimes do, which is to say peter out before reaching the S coast. But I have the feeling these might well make it our way.

We had thunder but only spotting rain earlier today, as I walked to a restaurant (c.11-12). But it had turned nice for the walk back (c. 4-5) as pictures taken in the fields in the south of Arrow Valley Park show:

The story of the day here, weather-wise, has been the ferocious wind, really very nasty for a day in June. The temperature has consequently been very poor for the time of year around 13 degrees.

Tomorrow looks set to be a thoroughly dismal day with heavy rain and even lower temperatures. What has happened to our spring/summer?
