Three quite heavy showers have passed through here since the lunchtime forecast put heavy emphasis on staying mainly dry - the last had pea-sized hail in it, which must mean the inversion "cap" as represented by a thick layer of stratocumulus at about 6 thousand feet has been broken through. Very dark bases to the cumulus. A lot cooler than yesterday.

Cold. The sun has shown itself quite a bit but when the cloud has come it has been grey and fairly thick - nothing useful rainwise about it here though. Skies have now cleared and overnight frost and fog is possible so they say.
As I was looking out of the back bedroom window earlier I realised why we are having such problems with dust. One of the fields which is going to become a housing estate in due course has been having a lot of heavy plant earth moving as part of the preparations, and now the disturbed earth is so dry that it takes off every time one of the big vehicles moves, let alone when they start pushing earth around. As I watched a small dust storm moved across the field towards the houses, thanks to the wind direction. At lower speeds it would mostly fall out or get caught by the hedges and grass, but the gusts we've been getting lift it above that level. A more normal (as in prevailing SW) air flow would send it instead out to the fields beyond, where the deposits could find a more suitable home.
